Default Hey Pogo or any other Cowboy Action Shooters

I was watching the Shooting Gallery on the Outdoor Channel and talking to a rep from Navy Arms. They had a replica of the Colt Lightning pump rifle made by Petters Only(sp?). They were talking like this was something relatively new, but are a lot of pump rifles used in place of lever guns? And if not, why is the lever gun used over a pump? It looked really neat, and looked like it would be faster than a lever.

Just curious.

Pedersoli.

..........they primarily make replicas of the Sharps and Reminton Rolling Block rifles.

They have a fairly decent rep.

Yes, the "pump action" Colt Lightening rifle repro has been egarly awaited by Cowboy Action Shooters for years! This is a period correct rifle, however it was not made famous by movie and television westerns. Colt Lightening rifles were very popular with trick shot artist and Wild West Shoes. Several were used at the 101 Ranch. There was even a "large frame" model that fired rifle sized cartridges.

Several manufactures have been promising to bring this "clone" to market, but they have all failed or have been delayed for one reason or another.

Lever action rifles chambered in pistol calibers are the norm in Cowboy action shooting., not the acception.

So far as "short stroking" modifications, these too are not the norm. They are catching on, but there still are a few of us who shoot our rifles as Mr. Winchester intended them!

Yeah, all the replica Lightnings have been quite dissapointing so far. I haven't heard any reports on the one made by Beretta.

I have a Winchester 73 replica made by Uberti, which is one of the better rifles for CAS, and I have been very happy with it.

The original Colt Lightning was a thing of beauty. However, I don't think it was a very popular firearm back in the 1800s. It didn't have the reliability of the Winchester or Marlin.

Rolling block rifles by Remington Firearms Company were very popular in the buffalo killing fields as well as long range target events. I have an original "Egyptian" export rifle. It saw a lot of guard duty service. The bore is perfect! I have never shot it because the ammunition is so rare (and expensive to replicate.)

Repros by David Pedersoli are very good! I have fired a few of them. The fit and finish is superior. As for accuracy? Black power loads worked the best for me. I was shooting off hand at a hundred yard reduced dimension steel buffalo target. I managed to hit the target seven out of ten times with open sights in what passed for "rapid fire". Not too bad for the first time shooting a borrowed rifle with the tang sight set up for someone else's eyes!
