My 77 year old mother has a Hi-point 380 with hollow points in her night stand. Of course she can't one hand it-but I wouldn't mess with her in the middle of the night!!

The two hi-points I have (995 and JCP40) are accurate, reliable, and a pleasure to shoot. Would the be my first choice for a self defense weapon? No...but of the guns I've had or have, they wouldn't be my last choice, not even close.

A friend of mine had a hi-point 9mm that was given to him by another friend. We would goto the range probably 5-6 times a month and blow off at least 200 rnds each time in his hi point and my ruger p944 each each trip. After about 3 months of this his hi point started malfunctioning bad. At first it was just misfires and we thought it was the ammo (used cheap crap ammo when it started). It was going right through the primer instead of denting it. Next trip we used S&W ammo and it was still misfiring a bit but not as bad. A couple week later my friend told me that the firing pin spring was all messed up and was getting stuck in a part of the slide. We had to mess with it a bit each time we went to the range to keep it shooting normal and with few misfires. Then a few weeks after that my friend was cleaning it and found that the area that held the firing pin and sping inside was starting to crack and a piece had already broken off and that was what was causing the spring to get messed up. They are low priced guns and the people that I have known who has owned them I have mainly found they are like a lot of other things that are cheap, sometimes you get a good one and sometimes you don't, its just a matter of luck. Gun shops and avid shooters alike have told me thins any time I had asked about that problem.

Have him send it back to Hi-Point, they have a lifetime warranty. They will either fix it or give him a brand new one, along with a spare magazine to compensate him for postage.

The Hi-Point slides are made of ZAMAK, a zinc alloy. They will eventually wear out/break if fired extensively. I think Hi-Point considers people who buy their guns probably can't afford to run a lot of ammo through it.

Hydrosonic, Have your friend contact them. Lifetime warranty regardless. Keep us posted as to results.

All Hi-Point firearms carry a lifetime, no-questions asked warranty. Whether you are the original purchaser, or a third-hand owner, your Hi-Point firearm will be repaired free of charge.
This came from their web site.

Yep, they have also "upgraded" the design a time or two, they usually send back the latest version.

They even get "bag guns" sent to them from people who never have the reciept or bought the gun. They get back a repaired or new gun with a magazine tossed in for their trouble of having to send it. In fact, never disassemble to clean as they say just clean the visible areas and send it in for a free detailed cleaning if it needs it.

I have heard good and bad about Hi-Point. I have not personally owned or shot one so there could not offer a reliability opinion. But, how about this. The 9mm pistol retails for $155 on their website. That is a good deal for the budget conscious consumer to go out a plink with. I would not trust my life or the life of a family member on a gun that retails for $155 dollars. I carry a sig 220 carry that I got out of a pawn shop for $500. There are plenty of guns out there that are alittle more money and a whole lot more reliable for your life defense. You can put it on layaway (I've done it plenty of times). IMHO, this would be a plinker, something to have fun with. Is your life worth $155 plus tax and call in?

My personal CCW is usually a G19 in MTAC (winter) or P-64 (summer) with a LCP as a BUG. I do keep a couple Hi Points as Truck Guns:

The "Seat Buddy" (C9 Hi-Point) is nice but difficult to reach for a cross-draw.

A Hi Point 995 carbine fits between the seats.

Personally, I prefer the "Kingston Holster" (Glock 26) that fits between the legs for my first line gun. Easily accessible and out of the way.

Here's the typical on the "Console Holster" (CZ-82). Actually this is usually inside the console (have a Bulgy Makarov there now).
