I assume you are actually shipping it to the dealer that will transfer it to him, it is illegal to sell and ship a handgun direct to an unlicensed person in another state. You can't ship US Postal service, but any of the common carriers like UPS and Fedex can handle the shipment. Dunno about Fedex, but UPS requires handguns to go air, more security in place along that route. Their ground service handles so much and has so many crooks stealing packages they stopped shipping them that way.

You may find it cheaper to take it to your dealer and have him ship it for you, since he CAN use the US Mail for that purpose. The cost will depend on what he charges for a fee.

Lots of good info here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

The buyer should give you the name of his ffl. Contact that guy and ask him this question.

It may be that the buyer's ffl requires shipment from another ffl.

I don't know all the laws, but for a pistol I'd ship it from FFL to FFL. Cover Your Ass

Links to the state websites with the laws are linked in my post above.

Now nobody should have 'ignorance of the law' as an excuse.

You see, I had a buyer once that had an FFL that would only accept from another FFL.

I went to my local FFL holder and asked him what he'd charge to send this item, and he told me $100.

ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS to send a pistol box via US Mail Parcel Post.

You can legally send a pistol to an FFL using UPS Next Day Air Saver (delivers in the afternoon instead of first crack of dawn for about half the price of overnight-service-with-morning-delivery) for about a third of that amount.

That FFL holder is no longer getting my business.

UPS wanted $45 to ship a pistol for me, so I shipped FEDEX for about $10.

That was a few years ago, however.

I was thinking the USPS had a rule change, and an individual could ship to a FFL now. It won't hurt to check with the USPS to see if I'm right.

No.

Only an FFL 01 can use the US Mail to send handguns to other FFL holders.

Anyone can use the US Mail to send long guns to any legal recipient.

FEDEX and UPS have their own rules you must follow. Mostly it is for overnight service that is about $50. A dealer can use the mail.

Most dealers only accept out of state firearms from another dealer so you need a dealer that only charges like $20 plus shipping to mail your pistol.

I don't know the rule on shipping. But anytime you ship something of value get a receipt. Parts kits, anything, receipt.
The V.A. sub contracted our meds to a wholesaler in the Carolinas. The meds were not making it to us. The employees in the P.O. were having a field day with our medications.
At first the V.A. thought we were just looking for extra meds. But when a couple of hundred vets starting bitching they got the message.
Now things are so bad with theft in the P.O. we have to drive to the V.A. to pick up our class II pain meds.
I have to sign for every med I get delivered to my house. Wonder what that is costing the Guberment times 10 million vets. for registerd mail.
Thanks U.S.P.S. you deliver. Sometimes.
