Default M1 Garand

I was out shooting the other weekend with a couple AK's and couple AR's, the guy next to me was shooting a M1 garand. He's a korean vet really nice guy and he asked me if I had ever shot a real battle rifle I laughed and told him not a garand. Long story short, he let me shoot his garand. I loved it!

Now I am looking at CMP to get me a couple. But I don't understand the grading system.

What do they mean when they say: "the muzzle will gauge less than 3 and the throat erosion will gauge less than 5." - per CMP

I don't understand what these rates equal to for useage/accuracy of the rifle.

A couple guys I shoot with told me to get the "Service Grade", they think they are the best buy for the money.

Thumbs up CMP Garands and M1 Carbines : Best deal in town.

Low numbers indicate that the barrel has less wear. There are gauges to measure the throat and muzzle.

As far as Service and Rack grades go: it's all about trade-offs. IMO , FWIW: Service Grade is the way to go for the first Garand or M1 Carbine.
Once somebody learns the rifles and how to work the CMP system , sometimes a Rack or even lower might become a good deal for the money.

I have around 6 Garands , 3 M1 Carbines , and 4 1903's , most of them from CMP.

In my opinion its the luck of the draw. I've purchased two service grade M1 carbines and the first, an Inland, wasn't so good but the second, a Winchester, was very good. I like the idea that they send them right to your door.
I have seen a couple of nice Garands that were CMP.
And yes I would order another.

.30-06 is a really heavy stopper! If you need to hunt Russian Boar.

M1-carbine is what I would use instead for close range combat.

Like Wiley says:
Yeah , no question that it's a roll of the dice. I have been very lucky with Garands and M1 Carbines , a little less lucky with the '03's.
The 1st Inland had some sub-Service Grade stock issues , nothing I couldn't fix.
Any other time , I would have exchanged the stock , but CMP was super busy so I let it slide. IIRC they got 5,000 orders on the 1st day.

Still the worst thing that ever happened was that I sent them $425.00 and , IIRC , they only sent me about $560.00 worth of '03 Springfield.

The worst $500.00 Garand from the CMP I've ever seen , was still far nicer than most of the crap I see at Gunshows for $800.00 - $1200.00. And if your not happy, they will bend over backwards to make it right. Best Customer service anywhere.

A collection of rifles without a M1 garand is just not complete.
