Default Remington recalling .17HMR semi-auto rifles

Anyone know about this? I saw a recall notice in Combat Handguns about it. I will find the ad and post the jist of it.

whats happend is the supplier of remington ammo has said that the ammo is not designed or sutiable in autoloaders and then remington began recalling there discontinued 17 hmr that never worked that great to begin with. there a have been issues with a few of the other auto loaders on the market as well in 17hmr. I saw the recall on the remington sight and there are notices at wall mart that the ammo should not be used in autos.

I read the recall notice and basically the ammo manufacturers started stating not to use their ammo in semiauto guns because of the danger of a case rupture IIRC. I have shot a 17hmr 597 and didn't notice any problems with it. In fact knowing this hasn't stopped me from working on a 17hmr upper for an ar15. I doubt any major manufacturer is going to want for (liability reasons) their factory semi 17hmr rifle out there with the ammo companies saying its unsafe to use their ammo in it.

Call me ignorant, but I guess I am not getting the connection of how it cannot be good for the s/a but is good for the bolt action?

The semi guns are blowback and rely on bolt weight to keep the action closed long enough to keep the case from backing out and rupturing. on the 17hmr and 22mag guns the bolt weight is around 15oz. I have found an after market company thats making heavier than standard bolts for 10/22 magnums at almost 17oz. I'd think it'd be more of a problem for leftys as their face is going to be on the ejection port side.

I would to know when you get the AR upper completed and test driven. That could very well be a homerun for the AR market.

I've got the bolt roughed out, I just need to make an extractor cut for it and harden it, and thread the barrel for a bushing. I think the hard part is going to be making the magwell adaptor.
