SOME FIREARMS STEELS
Thought this might be of help to you guys.
Manufactures have literally dozens of steels to choose from, depending on cost, and suitability for specific purposes.
AISI 1018 low carbon steel (also known as mild steel) - Non critical parts such as hardware, buttplates, barrel bands, sights.
AISI 1040 medium carbon steel- A low-cost heat treatable steel for applications that require greater strength than mild steel. Typical applications would be parts that need wear resitance, levers, screws.
AISI 4140 chrome-moly steel- A high-strength heat-treatable steel especially useful for barrels and sometimes for low stressed receivers (.22rimfire and other low pressure cartridge guns).
AISI 8620 alloy steel- Commonly known as ordnance steel, it is often used for high-strength firearm receivers and bolts. May be case-hardened for a high surface hardness while still retaining a tough and strong core.
AISI 1095 high carbon steel- especially suited for springs.
AISI 400 series (416,440,410, etc.) Heat-treatable and high-strength stainless steel used in barrels and receivers.
AISI 300 series (303, 304, etc.) - Non heat-treatable stainless steel for low-stressed parts, easier to machine than 400 series.
