I'm looking for a good scope to put on my new Savage 10FCP in 308.
I want it to have an illuminated reticle for low light.
Also, maybe, variable down to 3 or 4X for closer range...up to maybe 10X or so for longer ranges.
I have heard nothing but good things about the Super Sniper 10X, but it does not have an illuminated reticle.
How about a Mueller 4-16×50AO Tactical. Here check it out [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
I have a few Mueller optics and love em!! Haven't tried the Tactical yet, but looks nice. Decent price aswell.

So the scope has to be set specifically at 8X in order for the range finding mil dots to work? I've seen some that required the scope to be set at 10X as well.
That's the only feature I'm trying to avoid. I've seen other scopes that range correctly at any power because the size of the reitcle changes as well to still give proper readings. I just can't remember who made them?
It would be easier probably if I just looked for a fixed 10X. But, 10X is hard to use at closer ranges. That's why I wanted the variable. Maybe I am just wishing for something more than what actually exists?
It all exists. personaly if I had that gun Id want more than a 10X scope.
what exactly are you planning on doing with it?? that is the big question. the use will dictate what scope. I assume you plan on shooting it more than 300 yards. unless your hunting with it and plan on packing it in the woods an need lower magnifaction for jump shooting some thing. I would get at least a 6x20 makes being able to see those hits on paper is a lot easier an being exactly on target. my deer rifles 308, 30-06 7x57 ect all have fixed 4X or 3x9,s. my varmit stuff dont packit around 22 mag, 17 hmr, 223, 22-250 ect all have at least 18x and one has a 32x the 6x24,s being the most practical im trying to hit a beer can sized praire dog at 300-800 yards and I want to see it up close.
I dont have any iluminated scopes but I dont shoot much in the dark.

Honestly, yes. I'll probably be shooting most often at 300 meters or less. Maybe 400 at the most. That's about all I can do on my property.
I am not a long range competition shooter at all. The gun will be used for property protection and the occasional coyote and some target practice fun.
Military snipers tend to use fixed 10X scopes with success out to 1000 yards. But, with shots closer than 100 yards or so, the 10X can be over-powering on moving targets.
I think I found the scope I'm looking for.

The things I like about this scope is that it is illuminated for low light, and the knobs are in mils instead of moa...so your adjustments on the knobs match the reticle. Also, the FFP reticle always allows proper ranging at all magnifications instead of having to dial to a specific zoom first.
When zeroed at 100 yards, you can hold over out to 800 yards when using 308.
nice scope , pricy you will have a nice gun when done.
I was shooting at some praire dogs this year were the cross hairs would have had to be on the top of the moutain in that picture to hit were the zebra was. LOL
a good spotting scope would be a nice addition to the package. I like to zoom in with my 24x rifle scope when sigting in at 100 yards to check my hits ,a spoting scope saves a lot of walking. then a range finder is next on the list. I wish I had 400 meters on my property.
I prefer Nightforce scopes. They're expensive but awesome and worth every penny. Here's my FN SPR with Nightforce 5.5-22x50 NXS with illuminated NP-R1 reticle. I sent the rifle to GA Precision for a trigger job and bedding with a skim coat of Marine-Tex. Here's 3 shot group and a 5 shot group @ 200yds on the second time I took it out - first time @ 200 yds. It shoots much better than I can. Love the scope. Optics are crystal clear at long ranges.
Super Sniper is an excellent choice given the constraints but especially for the money.

Hey sabbathwolf, you mentioned coyote hunting.
One thing you have to remember if you are hunting coyote at night like we do in upstate ny, you use a red lensed spot light and you wont be able to see your reticle because it will wash out in the red light.
see if you can get a green reticle as an option , it shows up much better.

I looked at Nightforce too. But I didn't see anything with FFP.
