Default What is required to import ammunition?

All I've ascertained is that the ATF requires a "Class 6" permit which is a trivial cost. Does anyone know what caveats a Class-6 requires?

I read a passing comment on a different forum about requiring a store front. This would be the perfect motivation for both selling my sailboat for investment capital *and* open a gunsmith operation. However I don't know the details, and I know someone who operates a similar business out of their garage, so the storefront may not be necessary?

Sounds like the standard Form 6 import license. Ask 4thIDVet about those. Be aware most surplus ammo is sold in lots that require a convoy of semis to haul away from the dock, any less and they don't want to be bothered. Most commercial ammo already has authorized importers that typically have exclusive rights.

ATF wants gun dealers/gunsmiths to have an actual shop instead of the "kitchen table dealer" who orders stuff out of Shotgun News and resells on a custom order basis. AFAIK, once ammo was deregulated so you could mail order it without a license the ammo sellers were no longer required to have an FFL. I have heard conflicting opinions on this though so I would ask ATF to be sure. I do know a whole lot of farm and hardware stores around here carry ammo and I've never seen an FFL posted anywhere.

Runnings and Tractor Supply carry FFL licensing for their stores. I've done 4473 transfers in times past at both in South Dakota.
