I live in NC.
I thought NC was pretty pro 2nd amendment until I see they wont allow SBR's for individuals. I guess I could go the LLC route right?
Can anyone explain this to me? I form an LLC and the LLC owns the SBR but I own the LLC?

any time limits ?
I'm wanting to go the SBR route but have to go at a pace that my cash flow permits.
If I get a reciever now and submit the paperwork, is there any time limit for when the SBR must be completed or any complications that may arise? .. in case I have to sit on the project for a while.
Thanx in advance for whatever feedback folks can offer.
Cheers,
Harv

I see no problem in getting the tax stamp approved and building the SBR when you can finance it. As long as you have the receiver in hand with a serial number to put on the application and you build to the specs on the application then you are set. Just make sure to use that specific receiver when you do actually build it. I know, duh....hehe

AK lightning link
I see a picture on a few websites portraying what is claimed to be a lightning link for the AK; probably not registered as such, so buyer beware. Could be an expense paid trip for Club Fed.

So what we are left with is a concealable firearm designed to be fired with two hands. This falls under the NFA classification "Any Other Weapon", which is sort of a catchall category that can be several things such as shotgun pistols, gadget guns, pen guns, or a 2 gripped handgun.
You are correct, the government banned production of new machine guns for civillian ownership back in May 1986. Any machine guns made after that time would be illegal for a civillian to own. Only government, law enforcement, or properly licensed dealers can own one.
There are several "conversion devices" available for other weapons (HK sears, AR15 drop ins, etc.) that were registeered prior to the cutoff date, which is why some people can legaally convert newer weapons. The device itself is the registered machine gun, not the rifle. Unfortunately, there were no such devices available for the AK.

There are a couple "lightning link" designs for the AK. The first one required you to slot the rail just like on a FA AK receiver, but the autosear pinhole was not needed. ATF declared that because the receiver had to be modified to work it was not a "conversion device" and any AKs converted with them would be considered "registered receiver" conversions. I see no advantage to this type since it would be easier and cheaper just to drill the pinholes and use the OEM parts. I *think* a very few made it "out into the wild" before the ban, but not enough to encounter with any regularity.
The second type was a totally different design and requires no receiver mods, those are "conversion devices". Unfortunately, this design came about after the ban and is useful only for authorized manufacturers, dealers, and LE who may want to temporarily convert an AK without making the receiver an MG.
So, if an AK "lightning link" is ever represented as a legal transferable MG it most likely isn't unless it's a super rare first type that never got re-classified for some reason.
BTW, the small single piece of forked metal often represented as an Ak Lightning link or DIAS is actually for an SKS, not an AK.
