Default Possibly moving to New York....laws?

Once I graduate from school here in a bit I'm looking to take a government job up in NY (upstate not the city). Once I figure out where my new guard unit is going to be I'll have a definite on the county but for right now I'm looking at Schoharie County. I was on the NRA laws by state website and it looks like I'm going to have to get rid of half my guns (Yea right). First question is moving from PA to NY, I'll keep my Beretta M9 at my parents house in PA while I apply for the handgun permit. Then once that is completed I'll bring it home to daddy. Anyone see any problems with that? Not 100% on the laws so that's why I'm posting. Also they have their own "Assault Weapons" clause which pretty much eliminates my Norinco SKS, CETME, and Mini-14. I'm not one to break any laws, but I can't part with those guns. Any ideas?

I'm not sure, but I think it is tough up in the peoples republic of New York. My ex's brother tried to get me to let him use my address in Pa to buy certain guns, and I wouldn't let the twerp do it. They were from Lake George, so I know it wasn't as bad as being in NYC, but still bad.

Yea that's what I was afraid of. Worse comes to worse I just leave my guns here in PA, but that would defeat the purpose of owning them.... I've heard the judge that issues the permits is pretty lenient in that county, so I'm not too worried about the handgun, but enjoy my rifles. haha

Upstate NY is different from downstate. Your guns are good to go upstate, a pistol permit is required though for handguns. Schoharie county is nice country, I've killed some good eatin deer there.

Yea I talked to you over in your "welcome" about my family that lives in Schoharie county. I've decided to move to be closer to family (and our 33 acres of mountainous hunting land) but read all the laws on so called "assault weapons" (up to date as of 2008) and that eliminated my Mini-14, CETME, and SKS. That leaves me with two .22's, a .410, and a 91/30. By "good to go" you mean legal or "good to go" as long as no ones around haha. Thanks lefty

Why mine are safe as of the moment.

”So called assault weapons lawfully possessed prior to September
14, 1994 and large capacity ammunition feeding devices
manufactured prior to such date can continue to be
lawfully possessed.."

I particularly like the law that possession of a illegally loaded gun is a 3.5 year minimum mandatory sentence (loaded rifle in car for instance.) Seems a bit severe. My other favorite is that the possession of more than 20 guns outside your home is illegal. Nice Job NYS.

PS - How are those handgun licenses working out for ya?

I never transport any of my weapons loaded, so I don't need to worry about that, and I doubt I'll ever own more than 15 guns, so I'm in the clear there as well haha.

What if, for some reason, you made a mistake... or god forbid, someone shot a family member of yours... Would you put your unloaded weapon in your car to go respond? I wouldn't... Like all good Texans know... an unloaded gun is just a fancy club.

Where I can, I carry loaded weapons, and most of my weapons always have a loaded clip either nearby or inserted in the weapon.
