Default 1986 NFA act, What caused it?

We as gun owners seem to pay the price for insane acts of a small percentage of criminals that perpitrate acts like the shootings that have occured of late.

I of course come down firmly on the side of the second amendment but I see how these acts fan the flames of gun control clowns all over our nation.

All of this got me thinking of the NFA of 1986. Were there events that occured that were used to enable the stupid law to go into effect? I know that the criminal acts that happened in the 30's were used for the NFA 34.
