Direct drive - he'd start the bike on the centerstand, bring up the revs, and roll off the stand with the tire spinning. I think this shot is from the 1960s. Later bikes used a Crowerglide-style centrifugal clutch.

DOD jacket patch, from the world's first virtual motorcycle gang, circa 1992. We inhabited the usenet rec.motorcycles newsgroup. There were still machines with bang paths then, and minis and mainframes served clusters of users on terminals.
In a moment of what in retrospect was surely an early sign of senile dementia, Mary Shafer organized a DOD get-together and group tour of NASA Dryden. The stories of the Denizens vs. NASA's security people kept newsgroup traffic high for quite a while...
