I took a hair dryer to the Winchester and heated the dark spots.
It's brown shoe polish from the smell.
I thought whoever did it was pretty smart. Use what you got attitude.
Been on there for many years it appears. Rubbing it with paper towel or cloth doesn't pick up any color.

I bring to the contest: Mom's (younger) friend, and her huge rack!
Yeah, she kinda looks like Palin too... :P
Under all that cold weather gear (Remember, it's North Dakota), she's got about as nice a rack... 
And rack #1 while it was alive.
