In my opinion, he told the truth, just ranted like a lunatic. It's very difficult to be taken seriously when you scream your head off. He was not prepared for the question that everyone should have known would be brought up as how many gun deaths in the UK. Piers always asks this, as without the answer he has no argument at all. I think he's already been given more air time than he deserves.
