Well this is embarressing for the Rangers

I was taught that when caught in a tree after a drop you let loose your reserve chut and climb down it....so whats going on here. Even if I couldn;t do that I was told to climb your ass out of the tree to not embaress the squad!

I WAS TAUGHT NOT TO JUMP OUT OF A PERFECTLY GOOD AIRPLANE LOL.

ONE OF MY EXGIRLFRINDS DAD WASA OLD SMOKE JUMPER IN ALASKA AN HE HAD A FEW STORIES ABOT BEING IN A TREE OR TWO. THAT GUY WAS WONE TOUGH MAN.

HE WAS IN A TREE WITH A FIRE COMING AT HIM FAST AN HAD TO FALL THROUGH BRANCHES ABOUT 40 FEET HE CLAIMED BROKE AN ANKLE AN HAD TO GO ABOUT A HALF MILE UP A MOUNTAIN TO GET SAFE .

I was told by a Ranger who served in the late 90's that all of the old methods like using your reserve chute to climb down are now verboten because you might damage the chute. He also told me that the training facilities in Florida and Georgia had safety tape strung along various places to ensure that no trainees stepped into deep water in the swamps.

I'm not even going to talk about the changes to the mountain climbing training, but just wow.

It's not the Rangers, but I was shocked when a neighbor of mine a few years back joined the Army at 27, and got to come home on leave for 10 days at Christmas, DURING THE MIDDLE OF BASIC TRAINING!!!!!!!!!! WTF?!?!?!? A Christmas break from boot camp?!?!?! That's insane to me. I sure as heck didn't get, nor would I have wanted, a Christmas break when I was at Parris Island. I wanted the training to be over, but for good. Not a 10 day break in the middle. Things certainly have changed. They troops are way better equipped than we ever were, but I don't think that the regular military is near as hard as it should be. Other than SEALs or something. I can't believe that the Rangers have gotten that soft.

Shows my age! We were specifically dropped into trees to learn about the experience. They gave us face shield that looked like fencing masks and told us the proper ways to do things and have at it. None of this stay away you might get hurt shit the new army does.

Seems strange to me but I keep hearing how the new military has all this cool new equipment and is high tech but seems our training has gone soft....I was the last class in Airborne school that did PT in boots and BDU's...Class after me was wearing tennis shoes and army sweats....Wow things have changed.

I think alot of it has to do with the military's dwindling budget the last couple of decades. Equipment is expensive and many times hard to get. Hardcore training wears out or destroys that valuable equipment and thus would put even more strain on the already thin supplies of equipment and weapons.

We've got front line troops armed with worn out 40 year old rifles and magazines that are older than i am.
