Considering our lack of real alternatives I think it was an appropriate response. Sends the right message. Those 10 interceptors aren't going to make any difference to Russia if they want to launch...which they aren't anyway for the same reason they didn't before.

This whole affair with Georgia isn't about South Ossesia or whatever its called. Russian has planned this action for months. All they needed was the idiot in Georgia to take the bait.

Here's Russia's deal no one is talking about in the news... in fact it seems to be suppresed in the Western News.

Several US Marine trainers (perhaps 2) were killed in the Russian reaction to the Georgian move on Ossetia. Georgia moved into South Ossetia with the help of mercenaries and some regular forces that are being trained by ex-IDF personell (Israeli Defense Force--check out the story on Debkafiles).

Several of the mercenaries were killed (black guys, Americans), and a handfull were taken prisoner by the Russians. Georgia moved in agressively when they believed that South Ossetia would break-away. 60% of the people there have Russian passports, or identify with Russia. 60% of Georgian are Muslims. This does the math for you.

Russia moved in when hundreds of their civilians were killed by Georgian forces--mercencary and regualars. President Shaskavili absolutely did not calculate the Russian response and he got hosed.

It would be like us trying to move into Canada's Western Territories, and the entire Canadian Army (assuming they could and were organized enough to do so) retaliated.

I'm no Russia or Putin lover, but in this case--they took care of business.

So how do you rationalize the fact that it took the Russians MONTHS to get their forces in postition to REACT to Georgian "aggression"?

That is not a modern part of the world with a lot of paved roads. Were talking horse cart country.

Russia DID NOT pull out Because NATO told them to either. there IS some dark political agenda at work here.
The Ukrainians are defiant before the Russian bullies. Viktor Yuschenko says "bring it on, Russia".
We will see more military action by Russia, I get the feeling that they are tired of being the "bitch".

the georgians are idiots for firing first, they should have just sat there and done nothing, if the russians invaded then, then they could cry bloody murder

as it sits now i don't care how long the russians moved troops around, georgians fired first, and anything that happens after that to them, well tough shit pretty much

They didn't fire first-see below. Quit believing the AP (Al-Q Press) and the russians. Also the tantrum they have been throwing over a limited and strictly defensive missile system is BS. And no, we wouldn't have a problem if the russians installed the same type of system near us.

The Truth About Russia in Georgia

...Virtually everyone is wrong. Georgia didn't start it on August 7, nor on any other date. The South Ossetian militia started it on August 6 when its fighters fired on Georgian peacekeepers and Georgian villages with weapons banned by the agreement hammered out between the two sides in 1994. At the same time, the Russian military sent its invasion force bearing down on Georgia from the north side of the Caucasus Mountains on the Russian side of the border through the Roki tunnel and into Georgia. This happened before Saakashvili sent additional troops to South Ossetia and allegedly started the war.

Politicians are businessmen and celebrities. I watched an hour coverage on our candidates and heard 20 seconds of relevant information. Its all about looking good. This happened in the Roman Empire. A few families were fighting it out for a high position and ended up trying to impress the people rather than offer solutions. In the end the most wealthy family won, beginning the fall of the Roman empire. Sounds sickeningly familiar. We follow the shiny white light straight through the gates of oblivion. As for Russia, it is a militant country no matter what it says. They will not stop until the outcome of the cold war is more favorable. That would be a large operation if America were to get further involved. It would be hard to continue a 5 year occupation, go on the offense with a fairly large nation and worry about homeland defense.

The President of Georgia, who's a former NYC lawyer wanted to start WW3 before Bush left office.

McCain's top foreign policy advisor runs a company that lobbies Washington politicians for foreign governments. A guy named Randy Scheunemann.

One of their clients is the government of Georgia.
