MIM parts??

this poll is about MIM (metal injection molding) parts.

when MIM parts first started being used primarily in the 1911s there were all kinds of issues with them.

today MIM parts are everywhere and in just about everything made in one form or another. damn nere as prevailant as that other material from satan --plastic!

a year or two ago even LMT started using MIM in their gas keys. say what you will about MIM but i know for a fact LMT tested that part very seriously before they went to it.

i have quite a few MIM parts in a couple of my 1911s mostly S&W and colt and so far--they have been trouble free. (knock on wood).


i suspect that MIM process are at least some what improved from past disasterous attempts.

given past problems with MIM--how do you feel about MIM today?

I have never knowingly held, seen, touched, etc.... an MIM component, so I have no clue.

thats what i am thinking as well.

i got a few colt and S&W 1911 MIM parts on two of the 1911s so far they seem to work perfectly.

that $9 S&W hammer has got the be the best drop in trigger job i have ever seen for the $$-- it don't look like MIM but for $9 it just has to be--lol


i got ONE MIM slide stop that has failed to hold the slide open and it was one i got from SARCO. the other two S&W slide stops seem fine.


the deciding factor on MIM parts is generally who made them and if the part is suited for MIM to start with.

good question, one thing i can say is that MIM parts have come a long long way in the past few years.


i just got a bag of MIM colt and a couple PI made parts from numrich the other day.

they don't look at all like the pore-filled ,pock marked and grainy parts of the past.


there slick and smooth and feel very dense.

i don't think there are going to be any problems with these.


i have no problem running a safety, grip safety, mainspring housing and the like MIM.

a sear or dissconnector -- i have to think twice about ---

I have some Israeli Orlite M16 mag's that are MIM and really like them, when they get full of sand just use HP air and your done fooling around with them. They don't dent like metal mag's

MIM = Metal Injection Molding.

Orlite = Plastic.
