Default Opening Day of Deer Season

Opening day (1 August) fast approaches. Time to get out the real guns... the bolt action deer rifles, and select which one (of many) I'll use this season. Then more range time (still have to get HB's brake check done too) to verify sight in.

What does everyone here do special to get ready for deer season? AK ain't like back home in PA where the general rifle season was two weeks long and opening day was a religious event. Our deer season runs from 1 August to 31 December, so there's no rush to get out immediately. Besides, the bucks will still be in velvet right now.

So what are some special things other people do to get ready?

Quit shaving and taking showers - get the look, feel and smell of nature.

That's it?!? One day? That's like...... like ...... like being in prison! I know our season is liberal, but the Sitka Blacktail really doesn't compare to Eastern Whitetails.

The last deer I took was with an AMD-63 I built with the help of the folks here. Two before that were with a G3.

This year, I'll have to decide which one(s) get the honors. Maybe my savage enfield.

How many of you are in counties that specify tree stands, or mandate shotgun-only?

this year i'll be packing my DCU's in my duffel and heading over to Kuwait. my report date is the day before archery season opens in Nebraska, and I get back (going on the 120-day schedule which as always is subject to change) 3 days after the late season ends.

however, my date back just happens to be my birthday. so it'll be a nice present.

good luck this fall, kids. be safe out there. never know if there's another Chai Vang out there.
