What is the license fee for out of state hunters? What do the pelts go for?
liscence on the reservation was $100. he pelts as far as I know have no value and you seriously do not want to touch these things let alone skin them.(not much left after a 50 grain ballidtic tip makes two pieces of them) I paid the land owner $50 a day(well worth it, as he had to take time to drive us up to these areas as well as let us run atv around on all his property this is a big place. There are non reservation areas but not sure if SD the state requires a liscence or not. the big cost is the AMMO I shot aprox 800 rounds of 223 and about 300 rounds of 22 mag. ( I came to shoot) taking a semi auto it fun but gets pricy to shoot in a hurry and the barrel got hot fast.
I recomend the SAVAGE hmr 17 with the heavy barrel, very accurate ,priced right we had 6 of them out there. Optics is the big deal here even on the Hmr 17, a 18x power scope of good quality is advised and is a must on the high power stuff. You look through that scope all day and eye fatiuge is really a problem. I have a cheap BSA on the 223 and it will not be going next year. figure on at least $500 and up for a good scope if you want to really enjoy the day. mirage at 18x or higer starts to become a concern as well so good optics are the ticket 24x is ok at 500 yards but I would like more after that but not absolutly nessacry. I looked through a burris scope that IMOA was far better than the Leuopld on a differant guys gun. early june seems to be the best time as it is still grenn and the temps are not excessive plus the dogs are not as gun shy.

Im thinking if you shoot on Reservation land,no state hunting license would be needed.Of course the land owners will charge a fee.

Yeah, my .17 HM2 has a "bull barrel" and it is AWESOME! it took a bit to break this rifle in(sticky bolt and hard trigger at first) but after about 200 rounds, she started singing my song!

I DO want the HMR caliber to round out my varmint gun collection, though.
the Savages are more affordable, but I prefer the Marlin since owning this one.
In the end, they all do the same thing, I suppose.
Not sure if you noticed, when firing or havind the .17 cal fired, but did you catch a whiff of the "unusual smell" that these .17 rifle put off after a round is fired?
A very unique smell, kinda like wiring insulation burning coupled with something else that I cannot determine. I think it emanates from the polymer tip of the bullet as it streaks from the barrel.
...I think it smells kinda good..like gasoline( a guilty pleasure) LOL

you have to buy a tribal liscense it is $105 to hunt the resevation land but no state liscence was reguired). + pay the land owner. some places are more. Rosebud thay require a indian guide that is 100 as well. Three years ago we hunted private land I cant recall if we had to by a South Dokata liscence or not. (likely we did). the other thing to be very aware of is rattle snakes last year one crawled out of a dog hole right beside a shooter. we encounterd 5 total in one day.

From the South Dakota Hunting and Trapping Handbook, [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
Quote:
Predator/Varmint License
The Predator/Varmint license is needed to hunt
coyote, red fox, gray fox, skunk, raccoon, badger,
prairie dog, gopher, crow, jackrabbit, ground squirrel,
porcupine and marmot. Other licenses that may
be used in lieu of the Predator/Varmint license include
any valid South Dakota hunting license or
furbearer license. For a big game license to be
valid, the licensee must retain the top portion of the
big game license.
The cheapest nonresident license needed to hunt prairie dogs is the Predator/Varmint license, at $40.

EVERY ONE I SHOOT WITH OUT THERE IS GOOD. MOST OF MY CREW IS ON THE SAME TRAP TEAM. THERE IS ALWAYS A FRIENDLY RIVERLY AS TO SEE WHO CAN GET THE LONGEST DOCUMENTED KILL.
WHAT MY AK VARMIT BUILD HAS OVER THE AR BOYS AS FAR AS SHOOTING DOGS IS WEIGHT. IT IS AROUND 18 POUNDS LOADED AND IT DONT MOVE MUCH WHEN FIRED OR WHEN TRYING TO ZERO IN ON A TARGET. FOLLOW UP SHOTS ARE VERY VERY QUICK. I CAN SOME TIMES ADJUST AND FIRE THE SECOND SHOT IN SECONDS. I WOULD NOT WANT TO PACK THIS THING VERY FAR. tHE AR IS VERY GOOD AT THIS IF SET UP PROPERLY. IMOA THAT MEANS HEAVY LONG BARRREL BETTER TRIGGGER STOCK WITH CHEEK SUPORT ,WEIGHT IS YOUR FRIEND WHEN LYING ON THE GROUND. I AM NOT SURE WHAT I WILL TAKE NEXT YEAR, I REALLY WANT ONE AT 800-1000 YARDS THAT REALLY LEAVES OUT THE 223. I AM THINKING OF A 260 REMINGTON(MAYBE ON A AR10) OR A 6.5-284 OR 264 WIN mag BOLT ACTION. OR EVEN BIGGER THIS WILL BE FOR 20 SHOTS NOT 200+. a 50BMG WOULD BE COOL BUT THE PRICE OF THE AMMO NOT TO MENTION THE GUN WOULD KILL IT FOR ME. THERE IS A 17-223 REAMER AND BARREL ON THE BENCH AS WELL BUT THAT IS ONLY GOING TO BE A 250 YARD GUN I AM GOING FOR THE SAME TYPE OF BUILD BUT WITH LESS RECOIL(EVEN PLAN ON A MUZZEL BREAK) i AM HOPING FOR EVEN FASTER TARGET ACUSITION. I WANT TO KILL THE SECOND ONE BEFORE THE FIRST ONE HITS THE GROUND. LOL

Nice AK varmit rifle. I have never seen one quite like it. I have shot prairie dogs quite a bit on the other side of the river on the Crow Creek Sioux Tribal lands. I have used mainly .22mags and .17HMR at short ranges up to 200 yards. I used to go with my youngest son until he got freaked out by rattle snakes. One big one almost bit him so now he is reluctant to go anymore. I haven't gone in a while now but your post was an interesting read.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
I HAVE A COUPLE MORE VARMIT AK,S GOING TOGETHER . A 17-223, MATCH BARREL 223, HEAVY STAINLESS BARREL 308X39, AND LOOKING INTO A 22-250, 243,OR 260 REMINGTON ON A YUGO TRUNION OR POSSABLY A SIAGA DONER RIFLE.
