Default Which shotgun load to use....

Which is the appropriate shotgun load to use when ridding property of Raccoons? I don't mind the things, but they've hit up camp one too many times and it's in the best interest of people who have houses (down the street a bit) not to have such a brave creature around.

Probably a #4-#6 field load.

All my good 22's (aka not my 10/22's) are single shot break action or bolt. The darn things run too fast to get off more than 1 good shot.

Thanks for the info!

Making hamburger out of 'em isn't a problem.

Shoot, if there were prairie dogs around here to shoot, I'd buy a .308 to do it.

I would recommed a mid sized shot.....bb to #4. No smaller. Reason being that typically brave coons are well fed and thicker than "wild" coons. They can and do get to 30lb's and up. Also the larger shot allows "one pellet" kills at 40+ yards. Evaluate terrain....average distance and size of coons. Those elements should be your deciding factors.

My $.02

Yeah, but you mentioned that your single shots were too slow for a 2nd shot. 3.5 mags are not good for quick shots either. It takes too long for you to get up off your butt for the 2nd shot.

But then again, if you hit it with a 3.5 mag, why would you need a 2nd shot.

I take that as a challenge! And if I had a shotgun which could take 3.5 Mags I could find out who is right.
