Default Here's an idea for a camping stove for those roughing it

I saw this on another website:

Looks like a neat idea. I think I might make one for my buddies farm.

It's a little heavy for a backpack

Best rig I came up with for backpacking came out of a very old (c. 1920) British camping (actually, it was called "tramping". British, you know.) book:

Use a pot (preferably a set of nesting pots), coffee pot, whatever, with bail handles - the sort of handle like that on a pail. You then can suspend the pot over the fire with a length of very light chain with "s" hooks on either end to adjust for length.

Use one rock under your walking stick and another on top of the end of your walking stick to prop it up at about a 45-degree angle so the end of the walking stick is over your fire. You then use the chain to suspend the pot over the fire. I installed a small knob from the hardware store on the end of my walking stick for a good place to attach the chain, but really not necessary.

Very slick rig, one of those things you wonder why you hadn't thought of it. Light, simple, and quick enough that it makes sense even just for brewing up a pot of tea on a day hike.

Cleverly hidden in all this, of course, is an endorsement of the use of a walking stick. They're sorta like pocket knives, in that those who have one can't figure out how anyone gets along without one, and those who don't have one can't figure out why anyone would want one.

Nice. Man, I have so many stoves, military surplus, backpacking, general camping, I've covered the whole spectrum.

Need another one, now.

Ya, indeed. I love my cast iron Dutch oven and frying pans when I'm car camping.

I cook with cast iron at home most all the time.

My backpack kitchen isn't as heavy.

I love to cook in a dutch oven in the coals of a campfire. Some good cornbread or a cake on a chilly night is great with a hot cup of coffee for an evening snack. Even better when yer munchin away and you can hear some coyotes in the background.
