Default Help Me Identify This Bayonet

Hi,

Hoping someone can provide some insight for me as to what the origins of this bayonet are. I have had it for many, many years. Picked it up in an antique store a very long time ago and have had it laying around since.

The overall length is 20-5/8 inches long
The blade length is 15-3/4 inches long

There's a faint marking on this side...looks like I can make out the letters "RIA", but that's all...the rest is worn away :

Here's another marking...looks like all I can make out are a "1" and perhaps two "4" characters :

Would be great if someone could advise on what type of bayonet it is and when it was likely used.

Thanks...

SwampBilly

Hello SwampBilly,
The R.I.A. on US small arms usually refers to Rock Island Arsenal. The over-all impression is that of an US 1917 Enfield (P-17) rifle. Though it could be for an earlier US 30-40 Krag it most likely is for the P-17 of WW-I era.

Hi,

Thank for the help, but I recently was able to identify the bayonet with the assistance of some people on another Forum I frequent. The bayonet is for a 1913 Spanish Mauser. The "RIA" still left showing on it is remaining from the word "ARTILLARIA".

The bayonet in itself is not very collectible...there are many out there to be found. For that matter, I don't even think the Spanish Mauser is that collectible.

I came upon it long ago, as a kid, and my dad and I were in an antique store. I thought it was cool and my dad bought it for me...thinks we paid about $12 dollars for it. Research showed it's still worth about that and not much more.

Bayonets like this, in better shape and with the scabbard, seem to commonly sell in the $30s to $50s range.

Regards,

SwampBilly

I was thinking Mauser but the space from where it fits the barrel to the blade didn't look right to me.
Glad you found info on it.
