A person would be well advised to learn what edible plants are in the area , and to start a garden , if even just a small one . I heard of people surviving during the depression on turnips (ick) but they stayed alive .

Apparently this 55% never watched the news after Katrina.
I became interested in SHTF scenerios listening to family from the Texas Gulf coast. During several hurricanes (Katrina being the most notable) they were forced north, escaping the storm. During most, they made it far enough inland to relative's homes; Katrina caught them on the road. Fortune smiled in that they were sheltered by a kind family, who opened their home to several strangers. Power was out after the storm and did not return for a long time. They ran out of water early on, and waited for FEMA to save them. Locals came to the aid of the rescuers and rescued, with bottled water. All of this transpired days before FEMA finally showed up.
My college educated family members running away from the storms did little to save themselves.
After that, I started stocking up. SHTF may not be the end of life as we know it, but brief periods should awaken the sheeple. The storm may be brief, but one must survive it and the bleak period afterwards.
