Personally, I'm putting up quite a bit of canned foods in the basement. They are cheap enough to add another armload to the shopping cart, and they are already hydrated. The way I estimate it is that they are a bit heavier, but just as versatile as military MRE's. I also think that home canning is great if the normal precautions are observed. I sure hope that my kids will eat canned beets if the SHTF!!

Cool, and thanks for the link! I'm personally going to use my "Best Judgement" regarding any encounter, but I will always strive to learn, and try not to be too "Hard Headed" about things.

To be honest. I don't put a lot of faith in cans of food that has passed expiration. As for MREs I've only recently started eating the ones that the dates said were still good. The out of date ones dont show any real difference in flavor...let alone making me ill.

As for rice, beans and grains. It might be ok to put them in plastic bags, seal in an ammo can, then freeze in the deep freezer. You get the air tight seal, their stackable, and their frozen.

Damn....now if thats not the Okie coming out in me I dont know what is...
