There are hungry Americans all over this country. It's time to stop feeding the world and do for our own. End of shortage.

This is more fear mongering by the media machine. It will be interesting to see how the libtard Democraps put the spin on producing bio-fuels, something "green" that they have pushed for, versus burning fossil fuels. You can't have your cake and eat it too. Can't have it both ways. Food or fuel.

RetVet I agree completely! Fear mongering = instigation. MSNBC had a 3-page article on why there is a GRAIN shortage, but no mention of rice or the other things. Global economy, weak dollar, and most surprising to me (because I had not considered it) is that the other crops - Corn and Soybean in particular - yield more return per acre than Wheat.
So the rhetorical question is, "why wouldn't" the farmers reduce wheat crops? It makes sense when you think about it. Now we have 2x the cost of grains, pastas, and everything else that is a wheat-based product. So expect to spend more at the grocer for these items. They aren't running out, but the laws of supply and demand are raising the prices. Hooray capitalism...?!?

Don't believe the crap you hear that using grains for alcohol production is the reason for rising food prices. The giant agri-corporations are paid BILLIONS every year for NOT growing things, just google CRP; That stands for the Crop Reduction Program. If they took all the land that is lying fallow through the CRP and opened it up for either food or fuel production, there would be no problem. It's all just a way to suck more money out of us, and it doesn't matter who's in the White House, who is in charge of the Senate and House, Democrat, Republican, Independent, Green, ad Infinitum, ad Nauseum. What you need to remember is that they are ALL Politicians, and they could care less about the people they are supposed to represent, with VERY FEW exceptions. Hard times are coming, no doubt about that, but it's our own fault for not standing up together and saying "That's Enough". What other country in the world do you know that let's people stream across their borders and just poo poo it off ? Most countries have extensive fences backed by minefields, gun towers, and armed patrols who shoot on sight. Do you think they give a damn if someone calls foul ? All I can suggest is that you start looking for an isolated hole to crawl into when the stuff hits the fan, and hope it all works itself out. It might not hurt to prepare for long term nuclear survival just in case. When you start throwing the Muslims into the Nuke mix, it's like putting Hannibal Lecter in charge of the Asylum.

Just a few facts, please don't construe this as arguing with anybody.
Wheat, corn, soybeans, ANY crop that's grown is typically grown because it's an ideal match with the land and climate. Land/climate that's good for wheat, for instance, is rarely good for corn. Wheat growth occurs mainly in the spring and is harvested in summer.
Corn wants long, hot, humid summers, and is harvested in the fall.
You really can't effectively substitute one crop type for another. Corn and soybeans are one exception. But wheat & corn, or wheat and rice, or even rice and corn are not substitutable for each other. Not optimally.
