You're right Brad. I had always heard that he was a Marine in Viet Nam, that had turned to acting when he got out. Heard that's how he got the role of Major Dad. After your post I went and looked him up on IMDB, and sure enough, he wasn't a Marine. Thanks for setting me straight!!
