My dad has been pestering me about a welded steel AR lower he's thinking about. With a little doing it seems it would be actually pretty easy to do, get the right rectangular tubing and just weld on a buffer tube, weld a couple hex nuts in the right places for the takedown pins, and some other creative doing and it could be easily done. Dangit, now I wanna try working on one of them instead of finishing my flat bending jig...

Now I'm thinking on how an upper could be done, I have a lathe and a welder, [and a mill, but it wouldn't really be needed in that project] so anything's possible. Maybe go with a seamless DOM tube for the receiver in the right diameter, weld tabs on for the takedown pins, if the barrel's the same OD as the carrier's rails [or larger] then thread the outside of the receiver and make a nut for it on the lathe... DANG now I'm gonna be working on that... I guess it's better than getting burnt out on the AK builds.

I'm off to look for cheap AR barrels

plenty of those around!

lots of guys making ar blowback uppers.... its when you go to make a gas op upper that you really get tricky.

Mad_machinist (Rudy to me) is fantastic at balancing these things out and making them work right.
