Default New To AR Side

Did a lot of AK building until things went south so to speak with the barrel ban and then rising costs along with falling availability. I had really built all the rifles I was looking for anyway. This last year with its panic buying in AR land kept me from getting on board until the election madness slowed down. Finally picked up a DPMS lower with parts kit and six position stock in a package deal at my local dealer. Got that put together and then fell into another deal on a DPMS CMP/DCM 20" SS 1 in 8 twist barreled upper assembly so I now have a complete rifle. I have some factory ammo on hand and have loaded up some 69 grain Serria Match Kings to try out as well. So if it ever stops raining on weekends I will finally get to shoot my new toy. I hope to get involved in my loacal clubs DCM matches this next year after a bit of pratice and load testing this winter. I am also looking for a 5.45x39 upper to add to the mix too but thats another project for down the road. At any rate I am well on my way to yet another addiction. Just wanted to say hello and get back onto the list again as I am sure questions will come up as I start shooting.

Watch out for the dreaded BRD(Black Rifle Disease) it's very bad and will melt all your plastic cards and leave you deep in debt.

Most guys I know have both AKs and ARs and we have all built both, the AR builds are much easier and require a lot less tooling but still fun anyway.

I only have one AR that I didn't do any building on and it's an Olympic prototype.

My first AR was a Stag stripped lower with an M&A parts kit that I put together about an hour or so and it shots great.

After that I had to build them from scratch, you know barrel in the white, gas tube, upper and so forth.

Now I am working on an 80% lower from Tactical machining and I may move on the 0% Forging after that.

Once you have built the AKs the AR becomes very easy to work with.

Welcome to the Dark side and watch out for those AR owners that don't own and AK and look down on them.

Thanks for the reply Jim. Half of the fun with this type of gun hobby is talking with like minded people who enjoy the same pass time. I really took an unintended side trip when I bought a finished upper but it was a good deal. I do want to do a complete upper from parts and am thinking that a 5.45 would be a nice project. I just need to get going on finding out if I can get a barrel and then go from there. As for those who dont like the AK, so be it. I have shot many K of Wolf,Brown Bear, Milsurp and handloads through my rifles and have a good handle on what they will and will not do. I do enjoy loading for and shooting the AKs and am just as pumped about the AR too. Just diffrent flavors of the same good time the way I see it.

welcome to gunco.

we mostly build our irons--

you will like the AR. it is modular--sort of like legos--LOL!

i built a 7.62x39 and a 5.45x39 just a while back. the 5.45x39 has become my most used ar-car. it is just plain fun to shoot. the 7n ammo packs half-ton of bang for $.13!

ar's are a lot like potato chips ya can't have just one!!

I need to get a 5.45x39 going. I have two in the AK platform and plenty of ammo in stock. Where did you come by the 5.45 barrel for the AR?

Thanks for the tip. I checked the site and they are indeed out of stock at the moment. The barrel is made by ER Shaw so at least I know they are out there and what to be looking for. I plan on keeping after it until I find one and in the mean time I can start picking up the other parts to complete the upper.

I will check that out. I have been reading over on another list that M1S has been having on line credit card sales hacking problems. Seems quite a few who have ordered on line earlier this year with CC's have had fradulent charges show up on thier cards. There was a lot of chatter about long waiting periods for orders to be filled too. If I do get anything from them it will be by phone order.
Thanks again.

I am glad the cc I used on M1S expired then. I ordered in April, I am still waiting on that order.
