The increasingly common collision of human safety and animal instincts was illustrated for our reporter Greg Childress as he drove home Monday night: A deer carcass lay in the center lane on Interstate 40, with no sign of the car or truck that hit it. When he dialed 911, the operator said the driver who struck the deer hadn't bothered to call.Greg was heading home from a Chapel Hill Town Council meeting. The council, faced with eager hunters and residents whose shrubbery and gardens have become a tattered buffet, voted to request a permit to run an urban archery program.
