Chicago: Panel backs broader gun reporting rules
A key City Council committee on Thursday endorsed harsher penalties for people who fail to report the loss, theft, destruction or transfer of a gun measures proposed by Mayor Rahm Emanuel as the city continues to struggle with an increase in homicides during his tenure. Those caught not telling authorities within 48 hours would face optional jail sentences of three to six months instead of the current 20 days to three months. The fine would remain at $1,000 to $5,000.
