An armed robber entered a jewelry store in Chicago, Ill. and began pilfering the shop while holding the owner, 66-year-old stroke victim George Layous, his wife and two young grandchildren at gunpoint. The robber showed no mercy, pushing Mr. Layous to the ground and taking a purse and necklace from Mr. Layous’ 4-year-old granddaughter. After rounding up what he wanted, the criminal attempted to erase the store’s surveillance video, giving Mr. Layous an opportunity to act. In Arabic, Mr. Layous told his wife to retrieve the .380-caliber pistol he keeps in the store. Once armed, Mr. Layous shot the criminal in the leg, incapacitating him and ending the robbery. Following the incident, Mr. Layous exhibited pity towards his aggressor, telling local media, “I am very, very sorry for him.” Mr. Layous’ son Joseph told an interviewer that he is trying to help his children understand what happened and is making sure to stress to them that “not all guns are bad.”
