Our law here in South Dakota used to be onerous: without a CCW, a sidearm had to be in plain sight when being transported in a car. In the trunk was "concealed."

Thankfully, in 2004 that law was changed. Pistols can now be carried, unloaded, in the trunk or in any non-concealable box anywhere in the car by a non-licensee.
