Iowa: Second Amendment under Attack in Cities and Counties
Many pro-gun bills have been introduced in the Iowa Legislature this year. However, few are as timely and important as strengthening Iowaâs firearms preemption statute. By ignoring this issue, any improvement in firearm rights will be limited by the locality in which you reside. Iowa state law prohibits a political subdivision of the state from enacting an ordinance regulating the possession of firearms when possession is otherwise lawful under the laws of the state. Excluding schools, no state law bans permit holders from carrying a firearm on public property or on public property owned or operated by any particular locality. Moreover, ordinances that violate the state preemption law are void.
