They do the job for you, why pay more for quality. If your $300 WASR does it all for you, stay there and go no further. It's good to see some are easily satisfied and the Romy fits the bill for those. I prefer good quality of manufacturing in AKs. Don't confuse quality with functionality. Quality in workmanship is fit and form and not function as you state. The Yugoslavian, Hungarian, Russian, Bulgarian, Israeli, Polish AKs are all higher in quality than the lowly Romanian. If one wants to compare quality, merely compare AKs side by side. High quality in manufacturing is not for everyone. It's not about advertisement claims or paying more money as you state. Quality is easily seen with your own eyes as long as you are aware of what to look for. It's good to see you have fulfilled your collection and wants with only the lowly Romanian and saved a few dollars in your pocket. It's great to see some are completely satisfied with mediocre

You're a scream. I've had a double underfolder since the mid 80's (Maybe you should have wondered how I knew about the bogus claims made about Chinese rifles) and fired it at least 20K times.
I've built several PUFs as well as a couple of "G" rifles. I've helped others build rifles as well.
If there's an AK that was imported that I havent fired, it's because I never heard about it. I'd say that with 20+ years of experience I'm in a pretty good position to judge AKs.
For instance, I'm sure you'll be surprised to learn that with regard to rifles made in the Warsaw Pact countries, the biggest difference in the precision of non-critical machine work is NOT the country of origin. It's the date the rifle was made. Before 1981 the non-critical machine work was better no matter where the rifles were made. After '80 it's rougher. Wonder why? In two words, Ronald Reagan.
I don't "collect" AKs. I don't fondle AKs or gaze at them, admiring the furniture and the finish. I shoot them. I'm not fooled by marketing claims and I know that it's ridiculous to talk about "quality" when we're discussing a rifle that was designed to be produced as inexpensively as possible to equip armies of millions. It's like talking about the "quality" of a Sten, a Grease gun or a Liberator pistol.
Since (as you've implicitly admitted by not telling me what the Legion will do that a WASR won't do) spending more money doesn't get you a more accurate rifle, and doesn't get you a more reliable rifle, it's just a waste of money.

I can see your values are on the opposite end of the spectrum as mine. There is no need to argue or to attempt to agree. Nothing new has been provided to this discussion for the past several threads. This discussion has become painfully boring and of little to no value which makes it not worth the effort. You can assume what you don't know. You go your way, I'll go mine.
Just so I give you one answer to your question regarding Romanian quality. The Romy kits are the only ones that have a barrel pin that can be a friggin nightmare to remove. Some are so tight that the only way to remove them is to drill them out. Never had that problem with any other AK. So lack of quality (control) can impact even the casual builder.
I had originally posted this thread as a heads up on what was available. Some felt it necessary to post their personal feelings regarding Arsenal/K-Var
"Some people have extensive collections that they got pretty inexpensively as a reward for their participation in the marketing campaign involving "quality". Some about 'collecting' AKs, and a variety of other personal values. I regret ever entertaining your opinions and views. This thread is way past it's usefullness and should die a quick death. Try posting your own thread about why the Romy is the only AK one would ever need, any other is simply commercialist propaganda and a waste of money, and collecting is vain and a waste of time.

I guess someone missed this part of my post.
Or maybe they haven't been around long enough to know what a double underfolder or a PUF is. (A double underfolder is a Chinese made underfolder with a spike bayonet which folds under the barrel, hence the name "double underfolder". A PUF is a rifle made from a demilled rifle which was originally made in Poland and which has an underfolding stock, a/k/a PolishUnderFolder).
Last, I note you still haven't explained what a supposedly "quality" converted sporterized AK type rifle will do, that any other properly assembled AK clone will not do.
In the absence of that explanation, I think we can all draw our own conclusions as to why you failed to answer that EXTREMELY simple question.
And of course, this being America everyone is free to collect whatever they wish, but I think "collectors" should identify themselves as "collectors" before they give their opinions on "quality", especially when discussing something which was designed as a fighting rifle and which many people consider to be a tool. It's not like this is a board devoted to Hummel figurines and populated primarily by the fairer sex.

I see that you've been stung by my stating that some people got rifles at extremely low prices because they spent a lot of time posting on gun boards in aid of a marketing campaign by posting that certain AK clones were "quality" and denigrating other rifles. I also note that rather than denying that my statement is true, you chose to try to make it into a matter of my personal "feelings". It's not my "feelings" it's reality, whether you choose to recognize that fact or not.

You crack me up. You attempt to degrade when one offers a different opinion than the one you hold. You enjoy sniping others posts with your own posts of no value. You state opinion as fact backed up with attempts of historical nature that no one could ever substantiate. You attempt to fortify your opinion with 'we' statements trying to add value to your dribble. Your arguement is weak and full of assumptions and conjecture. You fancy yourself an expert in all things AK.
I cannot imagine why you waste your time here on a website for the AK enthuasist. I suggest you open your own website dedicated to the Romainian AK subtitled 'why any other AK is a waste of time and money'. You can have 4 sub forums. One dedicated to the removal of the Romy barrel pin (quality control problem), another dedicated to fixing the high quality Romy canted front sites and the third dedicated resolving the loose fitting, rattling top cover and a forth subforum to your brand of nonsense, errant rantings full of unfounded accusations , assumptions and degraditions all with the complete dismissal of logic. You could spend many hours there amussing yourself.
It must be a lonely world for you where you find very, very few others that hold the same demented, fanatical, illogical, and lustful devotion to the Romy AK, Sten, Liberator pistols and Hummel figurines.

Stung......ah, no. But please continue confirming my pitifully low opinion of you. I have run into many jokers and so-called experts in the firearm business. It's a shame really.

I am finished with this thread. I've already used way more energy than your logic dictates. You are like many who hide behind their keyboard snipe and ridicule. I do not plan on giving you anymore attention. I'm done with you. I'm sure you'll have to continue with a post or two, but you're all alone now. I would prefer you not respond to any of my posts in the future with your sniping. Attempt to add value to a post. Do me a favor, the next time you have a thought, keep it to yourself.
I have answered your question with regards to AK quality. I hope you can learn something. Reality is just that, but you must open your eyes and not be blinded by arrogance and ignorance.
