The finished product. The internals will be tomorrow but she is put together. Still has a little paint defect but that makes it different.

gunco,
nice bend job. next time you use high temp paint try
* navel jelly to give it a cheep park type finish and better paint job, check out hcpokies web page and his wright up. I tryed it and it worked better than I thought it would.
* heat the part to be painted with a hair dryer or heat gun ( not to hot) this will help keep the paint from running.
* small light coats
this is my 5.56 flat build with said ideas.

Slight defects. Who cares. That looks real nice.
I have yet to build an AK without a little defect here and there.
AKs should not be made pretty.
I am going to start dragging them on chains behind my truck, then put duct tape on them to look like real AKs.

A thought on the paint -

You could use acetone, kerosene, and/or paint thinner to thin that side and hit it again. Acetone will probably make the whole thing peel off, but thinner on a paper towel or rag may get it to run enough to smooth it up. Something to try, nothing really to lose since you plan to repaint anyway!

Also try the Jasco paint prep solution, it is another of the 75% phosphoric acid solutions available at any of the hardware stores, Lowe's, etc. Best to put everything into a cheap-o SS stock pot and either do it on the BBQ or on a propane burner. Just wear a mask and gloves! You don't necessarily need to heat them up but depending on the metal alloy it will help out.

Everything else looks good! Always rewarding to get things to come together.

Hey that's a great idea! Much easier than an oven to pre-heat. For my oven pre-heat I have some coat hanger pieces set just right and it is STILL a bugger to move the hot parts back and forth between oven and garage.

Bob -- when I first started I used a cold phosphoric acid solution from Home Depot in plastic containers for wall paper.

The solution is long gone and I'm not sure this is it. I left it in for an hour then rinsed and oiled.

winn r,
that is a lot cheeper than jasco ($19.xx) at home depot, but what is the % phos. ? that is the key to getting a good finish and some maganese (sp) from some D cell battery's to get the darker collor. in the end I used navel jelly (chepper less mess) but the down side was I had to leve it on over night to get a nice grey collor.
HC,
some times my two brain cells work and I get a good idea.

So it's OK to heat treat only the pivot pin holes on a 1.0mm receiver?
