I HAVE A BONE STOCK 308 SAIGA. I BOUGHT IT CHEAP AND PLAN TO REBARREL IT INTO SOME THING FOR SHOOTING LONG LONG RANGE. IM TALKING 800 YARDS AND BEYOND. I WILL BE USING IT ON PRAIRE DOGS OUT TO AS FAR AS I CAN SEE THEM. IT WILL BE A HEAVEY BARREL SNIPER TYPE DEAL. IVE CONSDERD SEVERAL ROUNDS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE 3 LUG BOLT AND THE HIGHER PRESSURES THIS GUN IS SAID TO HANDEL.

THE CANIDATES ARE A 22-250 WITH A FAST TWIST TO SHOOT 80 GRAIN BULLETS, A 22-243 BARREL BURNER BUT SUPER FAST AND FLAT IN A FAST TWIST FOR HEAVY BULLETS, A 243 WIN, A 6MM-284 FASTER THAN A 243, A 260 REMINGTON LIKELY THE EASIEST, A 6.5 CREEDMORE ALLOWS LONGER BULLET IN A 308 LENGTH MAG THAN A 260 REM, AND 6.-285 A PROVEN 1000 YARD COMPETIOR WITH LESS RECOIL. I AM GOING TO PASS ON ANY THING OVER 6.5 MM FOR NOW AS THIS IS GOING TO BE FOR VARMITS AND LIGHT RECOIL IS A MUST.

HERE ARE SOME SPECS ON THE CREEDMOORE VS THE 6.5-284

Hornady's 6.5mm Creedmoor and 6.5mm-284 Norma for F-Class Shooting

MAG CAPACITY IS NOT A HUGE ISSUE AS ILL ONL BE SHOOTING 3 OR 4 ROUNDS AT A TIME.

IM PLANING ON DOING A CONVERSION ON THE SAIGA AND OUT FITTING IT LIKE MY 223 VARMIT BUILD. i WOULD LIKE TO RESTAIN THE STOCK MAGS ALTHOUHT MODIFYING THEM SLIGHTLY IS A OPTION.

Wow I never looked much at the 6.5mm Creedmoor before. That's a neat size cartridge. I have loaded a lot of 6.5x55 and 6.5 bullet don't need super fast velocity to go far. I like that Creedmoor case and the boxes have the exact load data on them. I might build something on that or maybe even neck it up to 7mm or 7.62. That would require special reamers and dies though. 6.5mm lreally travel flat and far.

6.5mm Creedmoor

Max pressure = 60,000 PSI

Factory ammo pressure = 58,000 PSI

Factory load data loaded to 2.820" - 26" barrel

120gr - 43.5gr H4350 - 3020 FPS

140gr - 41.2gr H4350 - 2820 FPS

Hodgdon's 260 Remington load data - 2.780" - 24" barrel

120gr - 46.5gr H4350 - 2960 FPS - 58,200 PSI

125gr - 44.3gr H4350 - 2867 FPS - 57,900 PSI

140gr - 42.0gr H4350 - 2677 FPS - 58,800 PSI

142gr - 44.5gr H4350 - 2735 FPS - 58,000 PSI (match bullet)

160gr - 43.0gr H4350 - 2538 FPS - 58,200 PSI (loaded to 2.860" too long for 308 magazine)

from what Ive gatherd the creedmorre was designed to fit in the AR 10 mags and other 308 length mags with the heavier longer bullets correctly seated. were a 260 has to to be seated in some to fit. barrel life is susposed to be better an recoil is susposed to be less. I thoght the hornady factry loads were well under 60,000 PSI and there velocitys were under the 260 as well . the accuracy was susposd to better. The issue I have is only hornady is making brass and the round is really new. Im concerned that it might not take off. Im guessing 308 brass can be used cut down and reformed????? I have a a custom rugger bolt action that has all the whistles and bell on it with a shot out 222-250 heavy no taper barrel that I may go with a 6.5-284. That round is really taking off in the 1000 meter compitions I under stand. rebarreling that rugger would be the easiest and cheapest to do right now. that would also give me a reason to have a reamer and dies to mess with a AK barrel

I think 6.5 Creedmoor is based on the 30 TC case. That might be a Hornady cartridge too. The 30 TC is loaded with "high energy" powder that requires special machines to load. It beats 308 Winchester in factory loads even though the factory velocities are from a 26 inch barrel it beats 308 Win in a 24 inch barrel too. The load data for it has it matching 308 Win with over the counter powders but about 2 grains less powder. About the length of 300 Savage but a better shoulder angle for auto rifles. 284 Win and 6.5 x 284 have a fairly steep shoulder angle and the case is about a half inch in diameter. It would be interesting if you can get 6.5x284 to feed properly.

I just read on a differant gun forum that 7mm-08 works good for making creedmore brass it will have to be trimmed and posabbly fire formed but doable. it only reasons that 243 could be blown out or 308 necked down. Id like to be able to use surplus 308 brass if possable. If I do a bolt gun I will be fire forming and only necking my reloads any ways and might consider a tight need a neck turned chamber. the Sagia on the other hand will need a much losser chamber. I need to measure how long the sagia mag is for starters. if there is any extra room then a 260 REM with the bullet seated out would likely be a better choice. I have noticed the simularity to the savage line of as well. and at one point considerd the 6.5-x 22-250 wild cat. Im still kicking around a 300 savage build on a yugo kit.

OK I just looked at the stock Saiga mag and here is what i found. (I I havent shot this gun yet or even loaded it) there seems to be pleanty of extra length here. the 308 is susposed to be a max loaded length of 2.800 and the mag meaasures out at around 2.883 so there is around .083 extra space. the 260 REM with a big 160 grain is loaded to only 2.860 leaving .023 extra. it is tough to tell exactly how long the mag is dut to the rounds not sitting straight but 2.883 is pretty close to what I get. this tells me that a 142 grain SIE HPBT round that I would likely use and my books showing COL of only2.800 would have plenty of room to seat the bullet out another.080 aproximently if desired.

BTW the 6.5x55 is only loaded to 2.850 with a 100 grain bullet so that round would work but not the heavier bullets. as there around 3".

a 6mm remington would fit as would a 257 roberts. I dont have a .284 round yet but I think they may fit. I did have a couple 270 WSM cases and they fit pretty nicly see pics. this gets me to thinking about really steping things up how about a 6.5 WSM :) the 284 case is .500 OD the 270 WSM is bigger at ..550 but the loaded lingth will fit runs at around 60,000 psi samr range as some 308 loads. would need to be rebated for the bolt however. likely a barrel burner in a non chrome lined barrel. but man it would give 264 win mag performance :)
a discussion of it here.
6.5WSM -

here is a pic of a wolf 308 loaded to 2.790 as you can see there is a lot extra room.

and the 270 WSM CASES IN A SAIGA MAG
