Taylor still not gone yet, but likely soon
The running back, who left Halas Hall on Monday morning in the belief he was being released, will return to practice Tuesday to serve out a few more days in uniform before he likely will be … released.
More attention than his brief disappearance will be the come back act by Chester Taylor.
Jerry Angelo lovie smith Brandon manumaleuna in what bears coach Lovie Smith termed a "misunderstanding" Taylor went through roster limbo as the club waived five other players to reach the 80-man limit. Now, the Chicago Bears will try to Get the back that turns 32 next month even though 31 other teams know he's on the chopping block. He could be make sure for Marion Barber, who was held out of Monday's practice with a left calf muscle injury that isn't not believed to be serious.
He sought out an explanation from Smith Monday morning. In that conversation, a source said Taylor was told he wasn't in the team's plans. Taylor left the building and word spread he would be released, with his agent Ken Sarnoff announcing the news via Twitter.
That's where things turned goofy, or maybe not so much for a team that botched a first-round trade with the Ravens in April and once infamously announced Dave McGinnis as its next head coach without agreeing to a contract first.
Smith said after practice. "I guess there was a little bit of a misunderstanding on what we talked about, Chester Taylor is still a part of the team.
"If a player is released, I will tell him that, 'You're released, thank you.' That is not the case. I talked to him about what happened in the last game in a private conversation.
"As far as what is going to happen later on, we have cuts coming up. We'll let everyone know who is a part of it then, they'll know. I don't talk anymore than that. I talked about what happened the last game.
"He wanted to talk to me, but guys talk to me always. I'm the head football coach. Players who are wondering a little bit about what is going on, I want them to come up and talk with me. Thought we had a good conversation. I guess it didn't go exactly like I thought it did."
Although Taylor struggled last season averaging 2.4 yards per carry, he has a durable track record and could find work quickly. The sooner he is released, the better for him. Taylor was signed at the start of free agency in 2010 when the Bears also brought in tight end Brandon Manumaleuna. Between the two of them, they collected $13.105 million for per year.
Now, it appears Taylor will have to wait until Saturday for final cuts to the 53-man roster unless Angelo can pull off a deal before then.
