    Default RIMLESS 45-70 MADE EASY .

    WANT A 45-70 AK BUT DONT HAVE THE PARTS TO MAKE IT HAPPEN? HOW ABOUT A EASY TO MAKE VERSION THAT TAKES A 308 BOLT FACE ? WOULD USE OF THE SHELF DIES AN LIKLEY A 45-70 REAMER .

    iTS PRETTY SIMPLE .

    IF YOU BLOW OUT A 284 REMINGTON STRAIGHT YOU WILL HAVE A CASE ALMOST IDENTICAL TO A 45-70 WITH A . 470" REBATED RIM.

    ITS BEEN DONE BEFORE I HAVE FOUND ON BOLT ACTIONS.

    A 458-284 CAN BE LOADED WITH 45-70 DIES .

    THIS WOULD BE A FAIRLY EASY CONVERSION ON A 308 SAIGA AN COULD BE LOADED PRETTY HEAVY .

    iT CAN BE DOME ON A STANDARD AK PRETTY MUCH LIKE A 308 CONVERSION . MIGHT HAVE TO SINGLE STACK THE ROUNDS . OPEN THE BOLT FACE TO .470

    IT WILL NEED TO HEAD SPACE OF THE CASE HEAD.

    ANY ONE GOT A 45-70 REAMER? i HAVE A 458 WIN MAG BARREL TO RE CHAMBER .

    IM CONSIDERING A BARREL FOR THE SCREW IN BARREL BUILD THAT WILL WORK WITH THE 6MM BRX, AN 308 WIN BOLT .

    BASE:
    .45-70 -> .505
    .284 -> .501

    CASE LENGTH:
    .45-70 -> 2.105
    .284 -> 2.170

    The case head size difference is outside of SAAMI spec, but well within accepted limits for wildcats. And if you can't find .308 AK bolt, it's not hard to open an x39 bolt face up.

    The case head difference is only 4 thousands .

    go an measure various 308 cases I have about 5 sitting here an I get a range from . 464 to . .470 at the case head so im not to concerned .

    another example is the 6.5x55 that has american ammo about .008 under what specs call for .

    Also the the brass for the 284 is also a hell of a lot stronger as its made to handel 60,000 PSI plus pressures . I doubt at standard 45-70 pressures you would even have a issue .

    I would run the 45-70 reamer a bit short if the .004 head clearance is a issue that would make the chamber a bit tighter yet shorter an i would trim the 284 brass to length .

    id just run a bit tighter chamber to compensate . if it was a concern .

    For what its worth my 45-70 ammo I have here on hand is .500' an .501" at the case head so its exactly what a 284 case is suspoed to be . I think these are hand loads that came with a 45-70 H&R handi rilfe . they shoot fine . I dont know if there sized with tight dies or what ?

    yeap pretty easy to open up a x39 bolt face . I have done several . I do mine on a lathe but there is a end mill size the is almost perfect as well metric I think . I was thinking of getting the end mill an doing it on a mill . all the 6mm br an brxs im working on use a ,470 face so ill be ok with bolts .

    if you can find a 308 galil bolt it should work on a akm or m70 trunion .

    If i can borrow a reamer i might give this a try . I need 45-70 sies any way. Im not sure Im up for another big project .

    I think one of my screw barrel builds will be with a 308 length mag well so I could jsut do a a barrel an try it .

    a 475 wildey mag is sort of the same thing but shorter .

    the taper of a 458 version is more attractive that a inch longer .
