Year-Round Survival: $300 Underground Greenhouse Could Change How We Eat

This article was written by Elizabeth Renter and originally published at Natural Society

The “Walipini” is an underground greenhouse developed for South American mountain regions over twenty years ago. It was made to allow for edible plants to be grown year-round, no matter how severe the winter got. It’s cheap, simple, and could change everything.

Not everyone is lucky enough to live in a climate with a year-round growing season. Most of us have to wait for spring to replant our delicate greens or summer for our tomatoes and peppers. While this seasonal planting is effective and can still allow a family to eat off the land, an underground greenhouse could change it all and allow us to harvest in the dead of winter.

The greenhouse uses passive solar heating to keep the plants warm under its cover. The earth itself provides protection from the elements while plastic sheeting overhead allows sufficient sunlight to come through.

Black Blade: The only downside is that I can foresee the cops raiding these greenhouses claiming illegal plants are grown. Even if they find nothing illegal they will trash and destroy everything and maybe even steal private property (asset forfeiture seizure) in the process - legalized theft. Otherwise a good idea for growing food and becoming self-sufficient and independent.

Seriously, why would the cops raid a greenhouse? What would be the cause and why do you believe if they found nothing illegal they would trash it and steal your stuff? I am just amazed at what you come up with sometimes. There are greenhouse all over the place out here by me and none of them are ever raided or trashed by the cops.

A few years back they started raiding homes with solar panels because pot growers were using solar panels to power there grow lights, before that they would monitor electric usage if you were a suspect.

Numerous cases. Too many to cite.

Raided wrong house? Wrong Person? Oh shit I killed your family member? Don't get upset shit happens: http://www.businessinsider.com/9-horrifying-botched-police-raids-2012-2?op=1

Had a few more detailed cases ready to post by Firefox crashed here (out on the rig site with limited internet capability right now).

Point is, be careful and don't give them an excuse to terrorize you or yours. A "suspicious" greenhouse that appears that someone is attempting to hide/disguise like in the article could trigger an uncomfortable "visit" by the authorities. Could result in destroyed crops (your food source) and wrecked greenhouse. Even a normal greenhouse can bring unwanted attention so it is reasonable to keep a very low profile and become masters of disguise as much as possible. It always comes down to "survival" - an integral part of "prepping" correct?

Trying to "disguise" or hide a greenhouse would seem to me to bring more suspicion than simply having a greenhouse that is obviously a green house.
