Don't try and get the patina off, that is what assures its authenticity.
pretty sure brake fluid will actually strip metal down to bare over time.

I’ve had pretty good luck recently on some police trade in model 10’s just using the old tookbrush and 0w-20 synthetic Mobil one oil, then light polishing by hand with a strip of leather. Gets the light freckles of rust off and leaves the aged patina and straw coloring.
