this is an interesting topic.. I've got a polish ak74, and a couple weeks ago I found a place that had 5.45x39 russian surp in 1080rd spam cans for $180.... that's a pretty big savings over .223! I think I paid $210 for 400rds of brass .223 from cabelas a month ago.. then I bought a .22lr conversion.

I'll have to try the 5.45 in one of my bushy mags to see how they fit..

EDIT: just tried 20 rds in one of my grey follower bushy mags... they fit like a glove. I may have to look for one of those uppers from smith.

im using cproducts SS mags for it and have never had a jam yet. ive got 2 of the mags that hold 30 rnds each and ive put over 500rds thru it this weekend with not 1 problem and no i didnt clean it or anything else between days...

its a S&W (made by RRA, BTW) nice change for this gun.

i was thinking of building an upper--but it looks like S&W has built a few all ready.

any problems with this set up?
I just stuck a new 5.45 barrel in an old upper I wasn't using and use it on a couple different lowers. Sportsman's Guide sell the ammo for about $150 for 1080 rounds. It's not reloadable but it's sure cheap ammo if you just want to go out and burn a bunch of it up.

I had an AR vendor at the gun show last weekend tell me they were having a lot of problems with the AR's set up for AK ammo. I'm curious if others have heard or seen anything about this issue as the ammo is certainly cheaper...

Me and my buddy ran a steady 300 rounds through it without a hiccup.
If I cant hit something with 300 rounds. I am heading for the hills.

Not a single problem noted with mine. I just hope I can sock away a few more crates of the Russian ammo before it dries up.

best i can tell is a 5.45 will run right up there with a 5.56--

I have a 5.45 on my piston set up, runs great, but the surplus is nasty.
