    Difference in AR magazines

What is the difference between an AR mag that uses 223 and a7.62x39.

I know the 7.62x39mag is bowed but is the follower different?

I have been told that standard mags will feed 7.62x39 ifthey are only partially loaded.

I've thought about building one on an ak mag specific receiver but not. My understanding is you have to at least down load the mags but places like cproducts are making mags to go.

If the follower is different is it possible to just replace the follower in say a standard 30 rd mag and make it work for 7.62x39?

Does anyone know where you can buy a follower for 7.62x39

Exactly. You can use standard at mags but they stack differently due to circumference of the cartridge in relation to the 5.56 which leads to diminished capacity and other issues ie in follower and feed lips.

One quick trick. This works, but not perfectly...

Take a 20Rd AR mag. The newer kind that has a bend / curve to it. Remove the follower, and sand the bump on top nearly flat. Take about 1/2 of the bulk off. Then epoxy a spent 7.62x39 case to the follower. You may want to do this while it is in the mag to get it placed properly. Once cured, the mag will take a capacity of 15-16 without too much trouble. The follower may need to be trimmed a bit on the lower "legs" to allow that capacity. I have done this with three different Mag manufacturers and it works tolerably well, but each mag will need some adjusting and work. I have had to remove the shell case and flatten or change the angle to get the last two rounds to feed properly. The nose of the cartridge needs to be pointing up at about 7 degrees or so. No other real mods to the mags needed. Buy them as 20rounders. Buy replacement followers. Modify the followers in advance and test them for proper function. Store the followers for a just in case.......Mission accomplished at about $22 per mag.

I think if I ever build an x39 AR I will definitely go with one of the new AK magazine versions. They are like 3 times the cost but you could spend that new magazines easily and I have plenty of AK mags.

Thats very interesting what you did bellson. Do you have trouble with the spent case coming loose?

I like your idea. I was thinking of using a regular mag but replacing the follower with one for 7.62x39
