NDM-86, Tiger, & SVDs

What are your thoughts on these? I find them sexy. I will be getting a Mosin 91/30 very soon and already have both an AK and RPK in Soviet furniture. To keep with the theme, I think I need a dragunov clone.

CDNN has some nice NDM-86 in .308 for a decent price. However, they have been reported to have run out of spare mags. As far as I know, they are the only distrubitor to have had any to begin with. I'm sure some will show up on the secondary market, but considering CDNN wanted $90 a piece you know they will cost a small fortune. I have not rulled out the 308 NDM, but I'm leaning away from it.

A Russian SVD would be awsome, but I have never seen one for sale and I have seen estimates they are valued around $5K. That is WAY out of my range so...moving on.

The Tiger seems the most resonable. They are chambered for 7.62x54 and mags are available from several sources. People say you can sometimes find Tigers for $1K but I have not seen this myself. Have you seen any Tigers for sale? If so, what have been the price ranges? I was also wondering, is it legal to install a SVD barrel in a Tiger? The trick I'm sure if finding one.

BTW, the Romak3/PSL is nice but not what I'm looking for.

Call CDNN first and verify that they are out of mags. They have a "sales" inventory and an "actual" inventory. I bet they just find some more after this panic. I don't know how many times it has been floated that there are "only 3 NDMs left". They might as well be screaming "the sky is falling" I've heard it so much. Realistically we are looking at a 5-10 month supply unless purchases go up substantially. That is from a good source on the "actual inventory" side.

Even if they don't, a .308 Galil mag is supposed to be easily reworked to fit.

I have read reports of people calling and being told "we are out". But, like you suggested, if I had the money I would call and see myself.

Do the Galil mags look similar to the Chinese mags?

If you talked to a salesman, he only gets to see the inventory available for sale (not the inventory). I have no direct information on the mag situation, but that is how the Rifle situation was explained to me. The warehouse puts like 10 on the "sale inventory" computer and once they are gone some more pop up. Kinda like built in "plausible deniability" since the saleman's information really did say there were only 6 left.

The Galil mags look similar but not the same. From what I understand they are a tad longer and have more ribs. I'd imagine the finish would be different as well. HTH.

Do you have a Tiger or NDM-86? Whats your thoughts on them? Did they ever make a Polytech Dragunov? I read on another board that they did and it was called a PDM-86 but I have not read this anywere else.

The tigr look like a cool gun, not familiar with them though.. I went in a store once looking to buy a new gun and they had a NDM in 7.6254r I asked the price and ooked it all over but I decided to pass because I thought it was a rip off they wanted $600.00 bucks for it...Oh those were the days....

I have several. 3 NDMs in .308 (2 unfired), an unfired 1979 dated NDM in 54R, and a "California Armory" Tiger (also in 54R of course). I can't say which is my favoirite because I have yet to shoot the Tiger. I am planning to do some handloading for it, and thinking about having a SLFP installed by Marc Krebs (if he will do it) when I send it in for some other work. I'll slug the barrel and then start experimenting.

I really like the .308 NDMs and their accuracy will surprise you. I have hunted several years with mine and it has felled two good sized mule deers and a cougar. I don't have pics of the cougar, but here's some of the deer:

1999 taken from 250 yards with Hornady Custom 165gr SP --- never took a step.


2003 taken from 184 yards with Hornady AMAX 168gr --- ran about 35 yards before collapsing and bleeding out. NOT IMPRESSED WITH THIS AMMO


Here's my zero validation shots last year a couple of weeks before leaving. The 4th shot drew blood above.


Like I said, these things are accurate.

As far as the PDM-86 is concerned, I have also heard of their existence, but never seen them. My thought is that they are urban legend until someone actually shows up with one.

Military handguards are from private sale. Just waiting for the adjustable gas regulator from Dragunov Parts .com to make it complete.
