    Question AKM trunnion...

Howdy!! Newbie here, could y'all kind of take it easy on this old man? Question....have a akm parts kit i want too put together with hex, button head screws. Problem, the 6 holes in the front barrel trunnion, somebody went crazy with too big a bit drilling out the rivets and did not leave me with enough metal too tap for 10x32 screws. What's the next size to drill holes out and what size screws too use?

    1/4x28

There's also a metric size you can use, but I can't remember what it is... One of the gurus will jump in with that info, hopefully.

You could also weld up the holes and just start over. I wouldn't try this with the barrel in the trunnion though!

For screw sources, local hardware stores usually have specialty fasteners. If not, here's a few links:

I have to agree with rhino. 1/4-28 has been used many times in the past and is fine. however I too believe you will find a metric that will fall in between 10-32 and 1/4-28. what you realy NEED to do is find out what size your holes are now. this will determin if you can even use the metric size or are you oversize for them too. If yes then it will be the 1/4-28 anyway.
one last note ,ware the rivets came out are your holes round and just oversize or are they egg shaped at all from the rivet?? if they are egged out they will need to be drilled till they are round before you measure for thread size. As mentioned above if they are too big they will need to be filled and re drilled,,,,, but a 1/4-28 is fairly large so I doubt you are over its size for tapping .
good luck ,,, welcome to the board. keep posting and reading and your kit will end up great

The 5 and the 6 mm fall in between sizewise.

I like to start with the next larger size -- that way I've more opportunities for redoing it before my fastner heads are the size of nickels.

winner has GOOD advise,,, work your way up only if you need to. measure what you got before you decide what you need.
