My buddy just got a Bulgarian AKS-74U from Troy at Inrange. It looks nice! They are using SLR-95s as the donor rifle. The wood, being from a demilled AKSU kit, is "not new". Are these varnished? It looks like varnish to me, but I'd expect shellac?

QUESTION - we're looking for advice to refinish the wood and I'd like to know what these were finished with before I strip them down. See, I'd like to have the option of returning it to "as-is" condition if the wood underneath really sucks I hope they are similar to those Romy demill kits that became the Century SAR & WASR rifles. We could shellac those and it would look OK.

Any advice?

FWIW, we plan to pick up some "Soviet" handgrips at a later date...
