Hello,

It seems that many of us are building AK's, and I haven't seen any posts about how to improve the accuracy of these rifles, so I thought I would ask you for any suggestions.

dlmpsy--NC Shooter is the best at that game I know. Perhaps he'll pick up on this.

Like a race car ,attention to detail and a cumulative effect of serveral small things can get you 1.5 - 2 moa with a 7.62 gun, 1 moa or less is doable with a 5.56 and probably with a 5.45 gun(never worked a 5.45). The good news in this is that all of the above can be done without sacrificing the reliability and durability of an AK
Dempsey send me an e-mail or a ph # and I'll tell you what little I know Winn's opinion notwithstanding

Thoughts on Accurizing

OK, I'll lay out the major areas, remember I talk a whole lot better than I type, so fire me an e-mail and I'll give you a contact #. I know when I do this some of are going to think I'm full of S*#*, so I'll let Master Winn tell who he wants about my background.
Remember this: ALL FIREARMS TWIST,BUCK,@ WHIP sort of like an Anaconda swallowing a pig except Real Fast. The proper way to express this is:undulate in a rapid fashion creating sine waves of movement in a(primarily) vertical plane. THE MORAL OF THIS STORY:
a) YOU CAN'T STOP THE MOVEMENT
b) The FIX: MAKE IT WHIP THE SAME WAY EVERY TIME (or as close as you can)
AREAS OF MAJOR INTEREST TO WORK
1) headspace (This one is probably the biggest single gain) Call me for details on this; if you do it right you're on your way, if you do it wrong you've got a frigging DANGEROUS condition

Part 2

2) Gas tube fit (downward pressure only)
3) Lower Hanguard fit (have a little end shake in it)
4) Gas Piston fit ( there is a trick on this, call me)
5) lap the bolt when you headspace the gun(refer to # 1)
6) if you want to get real serious you can press all the stuff off of the barrel and polish up the journals on the barrel to reduce the tightness(possible bore constriction) but lining everything back up and re pinning is a PITA
Myself and some wellknown AK mechanics and one major vendor are running some experiments on receiver rigidity now, this should have an effect but how much who knows.
If you work the areas I told you everthing you get out of the gun will be dependent on barrel quality and ammo.
Ok WINN meister that ought to get'em started
Good shooting ncshooter

George thanks--Your many years on the Corps rifle team are an asset I value.

The advise is always good, even when I don't like it (!!"throw the barrel away"!!)

Thanks again.
