AK Flat Bending Jig Plans?

7008 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  mt-ac
Where can I find a current pattern for building my own AK flat bending jig? My searching so far has turned up only some five plus year old designs, there must be something newer. A PDF would be great, and I do have access to Bridgeports or CNC mills if needed.
Thanks!

You don't fix what isn't broke.

Other than the proprietary design of AK-Builder, there aren't any new designs better than the 555th style jig. It's easy to use, makes a great receiver, and doesn't take a master machinist to build. Old doesn't necessarily mean bad :)

Unless you use flats with pre-bent top rails, AK-Builder's new design isn't much help.
Where can I find this design?

Where can I find this design? The flats I am using have the top lip already bent.
You can check it out on his web site: AK-Builder.com, but I'm sure there are no plans for the average Joe to access. If there were, no one would buy bending jigs from him. Quality parts, quality tooling, and quality customer service from Curtis, so we need to support him.

Why not adapt the 555th style jig to work with pre-bent upper rails? Simple reduce the vertical dimensions of the male die 50 thousandths or so to clear the bent rails.

If you're referring to the 555th jig, Gunco has an excellent and extensive library at AK-47 Library - Gunco.net

The 555th plans are stickied there.
Another good idea. If you can find a build party close by, I bet there will be 2 or more variations of benders. The knowledge gained from everyone there is better than just reading on here. Unless you are dead set on getting all the tools and are going to build several guns, This is a great option. I made a 555th jig that works great but have several flats to bend. The AK builder jig is a sweet setup, Just out of my budget.
Just my .02 worth.
Check out You tube. There are some different versions on there that are pretty innovative.
Good Ideas! Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion, did not know of the resources here. Also the build party is/was a good idea. Was as the Weaponeer build party was last month which is where I picked up the "bug" to do something other than 1919's. It was just so easy to bend the flats into receivers thaht I had to start collecting parts. I'm thinking a little CNC engraving on the flats would be fun, something like Kolt w/a prancing donkey, St. Petersburg, Russia, Oct. 1917.
