I am going to be building some kits soon and I am looking for someone in the NW that can bead/sand blast them for me. This is not a tomorrow thing, I am a couple of months away from building then. I will have my flat bender by then so maybe I could bend some flats for you in exchange for beading my kits. I might also need some rail welding if anyone is interested.

:thankyou:

wet but I go to the dry on occasion. My daughter lives about 30 miles east of you. I am also going to relocate to that area after the first of the year depending on job situation. I am getting very tired of liberal land.

Shooter,

I'm in Kent.
Currently in the process of assembling my blast cabinet now but it will probably be close to a month before it's finished, taking off in a week for a two week vacation. Also got a 12 ton press with xebec's tools.

I'm in Kirkland. I also have a xebec jig comming in and I just picked up a 12 ton press at harbor this weekend. They were on sale for $99 so I couldn't pass it up. I have a flat bender just shipped from 555th. I am waiting on the trigger guard rivet tool and will order the other rivet tool in a week. If you need some flats bent maybe we could trade blasting for bending? I just ordered 10 flats today. Tapco has them on sale this week for $15 each with rails, rivets, and center support. If you want to have some bent I will bring the tool and we can bend what ever you have.

Do you think it would be possible in a month or so to get together and work on a build? I am buying all of the special tools but I have never built a AK. I would like to see it done once before I strike out on my own. I could wait until you have the blaster up and running. How do you plan on finishing your builds after you blast them?

One other thing. I don't know how I am going to attach my lower rails yet. I could screw them or rivet them but I would prefer to weld them. How do you attach your rails?

Thanks

See my reply to SgtRock.

Do you have a press? After I know what I'm doing I could loan you the barrel jig if you have a press. If you watch the sales at Harbor they go on sale every few months. It is nice to hear that there are some other builders in this area. Keep in touch. The best way is PM since I am not always watching old post.

FAL_Shooter,

Getting together sounds great. As far as builds go, I've only finished an AMD63 on a Vulcan receiver via screws and half way thru an AMD65 which I hope to rivet.
For finish, I've got two flavors of park. but may chicken out and use hi-temp paint.
Since the Vulcan was 100%, I didn't have to deal with attaching rails.
Waiting on three flats from a GB, got a full share of rivets from another GB (If you need any rivets, let me know. I doubt I'll be building 30 AK's in my lifetime).

I got in on the same group buy on rivets so I should be good on those. I have 10 flats comming in and the flat bender has been shipped. Still trying to decide how I am going to attach the rails. Do you have a MIG? How are you going to attach the rails on your flats? I will shortly have all the jigs so we should be covered there if you don't already have them all. Do you have a press? (If not, I do). I am still waiting for some things to be delivered. Once I get everything I will PM you and see what we can setup for a get together.

I would try the park. If you don't like it you can always cover it with the paint. I hope that Vulcan worked out for you. Mine was a nightmair. The rails were almost a 1/4 inch off and we had to do some serious bending to get the gun to work. The Vulcan is what made me decide to build my own. I figure I couldn't screw it up any worse than they did and they are supposed to know what they are doing. In addition to paying almost $90 bucks for an underfold receiver you need to add an additional $20+ transfer fee. I can afford to screw up 6 or 7 flats for that kind of money.

Keep me posted and we will get together soon.

fal_shooter,

I'm coming up to your house to assemble my AK?s. If you guys are getting together, I?d like to tag along. Got told how easy an AK build is by and talked into trying one by my son. Starting with an OOW receiver just to make it simpler.

By the way, I?m down in Puyallup.

FAL_Shooter,

Don't have any welding equipment, do have a 12 ton press.
I'm #18 on 555's list for his jig, haven't gotten around to ordering riveting jigs yet - allowance is'nt keeping up with my shopping list. If you are going to have the riveting jigs maybe I'll look into a spot welder.
The thing that spooks me about park'ing is how anal one has to be to get everything oil/grease free but with moral support (and a couple of beers) I might be up to it.

AK-Dave,

Can't speak for FAL_S but I say "the more the merrier".

I didn't want to volunteer for everyone to go to your house but you live in the middle so it would be a good spot to meet. I think a NW group build would be fun. I have every jig made on order and should have them all in a week or so. I got the trigger guard jig last night. Rivets should be shipped this weekend. I don't have a welder but I am looking MIG at Harbor. They had them on sale for $119. If I can put the welder off for a while that would be great. I would like to have some money left over for kits but I know I will need one some day. We will need to work out the welding before we can procede with the build unless we decide to rivet rails. Lets see what we can do to work this out.

If you guys will let one other in on the group build, I would like to join in. I'm working on my first build and am at the barrel pressing stage. I don't have a press I was going to try to threaded rod method. If that fails I would like some assistance using a press. I live in Bellevue.

As far as I'm concerned come one come all BUT we can't do it at my place. If it works for SgtRock2 or someone else that would like to host then great.

I bought a MIG welder today so that is the last major tool I need to buy. I still need headspace gauges and a MEPP torchand a bead blaster and some park tanks (the tanks and bead blaster can wait until I move).

I havn't welded in about 30 years so this should be fun. I need to learn to stay away from Harbor Freight. Does anyone in this group know how to weld?

We should start listing what each of us can bring to the party. I have a welder, 10 flats and every jig known to man. I also have a press but SgtRock2 also has one so I don't need to bring mine. Is anyone else bringing any special knowledge, tools or beer and pizza?

I have all the jigs on order but have not received them all. The earliest I can see meeting is a couple of weeks from now. I think my first order of business is bending a few flats. As far as I'm concerned anyone that wants to learn together is free to join in but I'm going to be there to stay on track and work. If you are like minded then I say :welcome:

Let?s see,

I can learn to weld, I have next to no tools useful for a build, I have Gungadeal?s Good 'Nuff Riveting Video coming and I can bring me & pizza. Just don?t invite ?the I?ll pay you tomorrow guy.? :)

I don?t mind using my garage if you guys are willing to travel that far south. As I said, this is a new experience and I?m trying to gather as much info as I can from these forums. It?s going to the little details and tips the will be the hardest to work through. I would like to do 80% or less receivers just for the ?I did that? gratification.

Since it will be a bit before we get together, we can work out more things and expand our tool and knowledge bases. Feel free to e-mail or PM anytime.

If you see a few put togeather rite in front of you and with you, it will be so much more informative, clear , and reashureing that just reading about it , you will be wonderiny why you did not build thies sooner. their is no substitute for hands on!!

this sounds realy GREAT for you guys a, group build. Now that Is "team GUNCO" realy at its best. members getting togeather talk'in builds, do'in builds, and shoot'in builds, it just dont get no better than that.

Hello from beautiful, hot Ramona, CA.
Hate to think that my vacation is half over already.

I don't mind hosting.
My only concerns are getting 1/2 my garage cleared out so there is some working space, finish assembling my blasting cabinet and having a realistic plan on what can be accomplished in a day.
As I mentioned before, I've only completed an AMD-63 screw build (spent an hour or two on and off over a period of 2 weeks, using a drill press, dremel and hand files on a Vulcan receiver).
Now that I think about it, having a reasonable plan on what can be accomplished in one day is my major concern.
A complete build even on a 100% receiver seems not possible in one day to me and I'd rather not have anyone's expectations crushed.

Back to the margaritas,

Cheers
