In a new video to be distributed to 61,000 schools across the nation, homosexual activists are using popular children's TV characters such as SpongeBob SquarePants and Barney the dinosaur to surreptitiously indoctrinate young children into their lifestyle, a pro-family activist group charges.

SpongeBob Squarepants is one of the popular children's TV characters appearing in a new 'tolerance' video.

Based on the 1970s hit song "We Are Family," the video will be distributed to public and private elementary schools nationwide March 11, along with lesson plans for teachers, points out the American Family Association.

The distribution, sponsored by FedEx, will coincide with the video's broadcast March 11 on Nickelodeon, PBS, and the Disney Channel in celebration of the proposed National We Are Family Day.

AFA researcher Ed Vitagliano sees the project as an "open door" to a secondary discussion of homosexuality, noting the the foundation has a "tolerance pledge" on its website that children and others are encouraged to sign, which includes sexual orientation. [Editor's note: This story previously linked to the website of a group that has the same name but no connection to the video. WND regrets the error.]

"While we want everyone to respect other people's beliefs, we do not consider it appropriate for children's television to be used in an effort to indoctrinate children to accept homosexuality," he said.

Vitagliano says the foundation is employing a bait-and-switch approach, with popular children's figures such as Arthur, Dora the Explorer, JoJo, Clifford the Big Red Dog, Big Bird and Bob the Builder.

The objective is to get children to the foundation's website "and there they're given the full pitch about homosexuality," he said.

Video producer Christopher Cerf called the video an "unprecedented event."

"For the first time characters from all of the important kids shows came together to appear in the same video," he said in a November news release. "The producers and performers from each show embraced the spirit and message of this project."

The We Are Family Foundation was founded by singer-songwriter Nile Rodgers, who wrote the hit song recorded in 1979 by Sister Sledge.

The video was financed by a grant from the Toni Mendez Shapiro estate.

"Cooperation and unity are the most important values we can teach children," Rodgers said. "We believe that this is the essential first step to loving thy neighbor."

The We Are Family Foundation says its partners in the production are the Anti-Defamation League, Crown Theatres, Disney Channel, FedEx, Nickelodeon, HIT Entertainment, Nile Rodgers/Sony Publishing/The Bernard Edwards Estate/Warner Chapel, Nelvana, PBS, Scholastic, Sesame Workshop, Toni Mendez Shapiro Estate, and WGBH-TV in Boston.

A Federal Express spokesman said the company is "proud" to provide shipping for the project.

"Promoting diversity is part of our corporate culture at FedEx," said William G. Margaritis, senior vice president, worldwide corporate communications.

Characters appearing in the video are from award-winning shows including "Arthur," "Barney," "Bear in the Big Blue House," "Between the Lions," "Blue's Clues, Bob the Builder," "The Book of Pooh," "Clifford the Big Red Dog," "Dora the Explorer," "Jimmy Neutron," "JoJo's Circus," "Kim Possible," "Lilo & Stitch: The Series," "Little Mermaid," "Madeline," "The Magic School Bus," "The Muppet Show," "The Proud Family," "Rugrats," "Sesame Street," "SpongeBob SquarePants," and "Zoom."

The video also features cameo appearances by entertainers Bill Cosby, Diana Ross and Whoopi Goldberg.

So, public schools will indoctrinate children as to what is a "family?"

What happened to the three "R"s?

Yes, I do! While I am tolerant of people who are of any color or sexuality, I want to make it my place to teach my children that!

The schools need to teach the 3 R's and not worry about how to raise children.

I will make my opinion heard on this to the people above.

I'd say I have a problem with it also. Try inserting Christian Tolerance in place of Gay Tolerance and see where you get.

I always knew Barney was gay.

About forty years ago we started with sex education in schools, remember? Has anything bad happened because of it?

And in the US we are spending gazillions of dollars on edujamcation but our kids are far down the ladder in worldwide academic achievement. Anyone wonder why?

And why so many parents want to send their children to private schools?

I agree 100%!! My daughter already knows what homosexuality is because she asked ME and *I* explained it to her. I don't need some school telling her that's normal because I don't believe it is normal. I have nothing against gays and even have a few friends that are gay, but I can't tell my daughter that is 'natural' because I don't feel it is. The schools should not be teaching this, it's up to the parents, we should be able to word it the way WE want to. My daughter loves SpongeBob, I really don't need her coming home from school asking questions about SpongeBob and homosexuality.

I do hope that whatever schools decide to do this, a note will come home for the parents asking their permission first. If some parents want that, then that's up to them, but for those of us who don't want our kids to see it, we should have that choice. Teaching children not to hate because of race, Religion, or sexuality is not a problem, but teaching them this is normal, is not ok, in my book anyway. To each his/her own.

When I was in 7th grade about 1981 it was our parents choice if we were to attend the sex eductaion classes that dealt with reproductive chores.

That would be fine with me if they give a choice in the matter. My daughter is 2 and she loves Barney. Most kids are done with Barney around 5? How young is this indoctrination going to go? 2 year olds really have no idea what Barney would be talking about without graphic descriptions? 2 guys kissing each other singing I love, you love me?

Being a child is about playing tag, riding a bike, going to the zoo, and playing with friends. I know not all children grow up in idealic circumstances, but why politicize stuff they really cannot handle until they are teens?

Hell, even teeens don't understand a lot. I thought I had everything figured out, but I didn't know jack and I still don't at 35 on a lot of stuff. I've watched my Dad discover things about the human condition in his 50's as well.

The gay thing isn't the issue for me at all! It's the nanny state mentality.

The school system has no business getting into the area of preaching sexual orientation tolerance or any special "tolerance" as far as that goes. This is just another example of a few liberal parents pushing their views on the school board.

I don't need or want the school system providing behavioral education to my children. That's my job as a parent!

Yep, I've got a big problem with this. It is despicable that an organization calling itself the American Family Association would so blatantly lie to further its ***-bashing agenda. I never thought of dishonesty and intolerance as family values.

Go to the site and see if you can find the "full pitch about homosexuality" that the children are being lured into. I couldn't find it.

Although after going to that site I do seem to be pre-occupied with sexual fantasies about DorGunR, don't know what that's about...

Smeg, is right, here. Go to the AFA and read their message. They are not really a family advocacy group, their whole message is anti-gay. They hate homosexuals to the edge of insanity. They see it how it differs from their view of a family. The "traditional" family of Mother, Father, and children is not the majority anymore. There are NO homosexual recruiters!!!
