please bear with my dumb ass. i know this topic has been hashed about all over, but it's one of those "...until it happens to me..." things.
i most likely will post this elsewhere since there really is no "one size fits all" answer and i can use all the advise i can get.
i run "norton internet security", "spybot s&d", "adaware", "spyware blaster". run scans at least twice weekly with norton and at least every other day with the others.
i check all for updates and download and install EVERY time i go online.
i have a dsl connnection so it only takes moments.
i go to trendmicro.com at least ONCE a week and run an online scan.
running a panda active scan as i type this.
today i installed grisoft avg antivirus and ran it after i ran norton, which came up clean. avg comes up dirty with ONE virus.
i then run trendmicro.com which comes up with TWO more viruses aside from the one that avg came up with but not the one that avg came up with. i ran norton update, and then reran norton again, which still came up clean.
**(panda finished, see below. trying to maintain timeline)
actually, they're not viruses,they're trojans.
alright, i'm not the most computer literate guy in the world so i spend a good deal of time this afternoon tracking down,(what to me are deeply embedded m#$herf^&kers and deleting them and rescanning).
trendmicro, (which, by the way, until i cleaned the shiznit off my hard drive crashed my system FOUR times) comes up clean as does avg.
** panda comes back and says it has found and cleaned yet a fourth infestation.
spent a good deal of the afternoon with my folks helping mom with her new
xmas 'puter: downloadin', updatin', tutorin', etc. (i'm only marginally more advanced)
now, i can live with having to maintain a heightened alert if necessary, but do i really need to run 47,000 pieces of "anti bs" to get by; and more importantly, since i live in TN and it's Saturday PM, do i need to shag my ass to the liquor store for more Maker's Mark while i'm able to do so or do i wait and do it after 2.5 more beers.
i am serious about my situation but couldn't resist hammering PM's little childishness.
yes, i know paragraphs are my friends.
i just don't know how to format this stuff like i would like.

I'm hoping this isn't what I'm assuming it's about--if so I don't think you need to start in on this over here......

OK, First, you aren't :deadhorse:
Spyware is a problem that causes lots of problems. It's damn hard to get rid of sometimes, and it can be labor intensive.
First, lose "Spyware Blaster". IIRC, it's a false flag app that only cleans off the spyware it's parent isn't loading on your system. (No, I'm not kidding. There are "antispyware" apps that do this, and I think this is one of them.)
OK.
Now, you also need the latest, greatest AdAware and Spybot. Run Adaware. Allow it to remove what it wants. Run Spybot, and have it "Immunize" the system. Both of these apps are available from www.download.com .
Also from download, get "Bazooka". Run it last. It should find a few remnants. Follow the directions it sends you to to remove this crap.
You really need to turn your security settings up on Internet Explorer. Go to tools/internet options/security tab, click default level, and select "Medium" or higher.
Finally, you need to pay more attention where you are surfing to. The worst sites for spyware are shopping, Warez, Appz, Free downloads(screensavers, cursors, games, ect) gambling, and the big brother of all, PORN.

Thanks for the info Cammo. I alreay had Adawre SE and SpyBot, but didn't have Bazooka.

Doog, also available from download.com is an antivirus called Avast. It found stuff on my PC that Norton missed. But in all fairness to Norton, I forgot to renew my subscription and it hadn't updated for awhile. Avast is free to download and free updates.

Sang or Cammo(or anyone else), either of you know anything on Avast?

Try re-formatting your hard drive. I do mine at least twice a year. Make sure you backup everything.

I use Mozilla Firefox and love it. I also keep IE on the desktop as there are some things that won't load on Mozilla.
